09:57 ‘We need answers’: relatives seek Moskva warship’s missing crew
For days after the Moskva cruiser sank in the Black Sea, Yulia Tsyvova had been desperately searching for information about her son Andrei.

Like hundreds of other Russian families of the crew members, she had not been told whether he had survived the reported Ukrainian missile attack that had sunk the Russian flagship of the Black Sea fleet.

Then on Monday morning she received a call from the Russian defence ministry. Her son was dead.

“He was only 19, he was a conscript,” said Tsyvova, who wept as she spoke by telephone. “They didn’t tell me anything else, no information on when the funeral would be.

“I am sure he isn’t the only one who died.”

Family members of sailors who served onboard the Moskva are demanding answers as the ministry has sought to suppress information about what happened to the ship or its estimated 510-strong crew.

The total number of dead, wounded and missing remains a state secret. Tsyvov’s death, which has not been previously reported, is only the second confirmed from the warship. Another three families have gone public saying they cannot find their sons who were serving onboard.

Media reports suggest the number of casualties from the attack will be far higher, and the efforts to suppress information about the deaths have raised comparisons with the Kursk submarine incident that left 118 sailors dead and struck a blow to the prestige of a young President Vladimir Putin in 2000.

“This regime has never been very transparent about casualties,” said Alexander Gabuev, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Moscow Center, pointing to Russia’s military operations in Ukraine and Syria or the investigations into attacks at Beslan and the Dubrovka theatre. “A lot of this has precedence and it’s not something very new or very surprising.”

New information on the young sailors who died will also renew scrutiny about the Russian government’s use of conscripts in battle, something Putin had explicitly denied was the case early in the war.

The defence ministry was forced to admit it had deployed conscripts after some were captured in Ukraine in the first weeks of the war. It claimed it would no longer use them.

But several parents of Moskva crew members have told the Guardian and others that their sons onboard the ship were indeed conscripts and not professional soldiers on contract.

“A conscript who isn’t supposed to see active fighting is among those missing in action,” wrote Dmitry Shkrebets, whose son Yegor was a cook on the ship and is listed as missing in action. “Guys, how can you be missing in action in the middle of the high seas?!!!”

Photos and a video purporting to show the Moskva shortly before it sank emerged on Monday, nearly four days after it sank. The images showed that its lifeboats had been deployed, indicating an order was likely given to abandon ship.

Families of several crew members have said they managed to locate their family members alive.

Eskender Djeparov said he recognised his brother Akbar in a video released by the defence ministry that showed sailors from the Moskva meeting a top admiral in Sevastopol after the ship sank.

“We were very happy when we saw him in the video of the crew in Sevastopol,” Djeparov said. “The day after the tragedy, he called our mother and said that he is alive and well. That she shouldn’t worry about him. He hasn’t told us what happened, he doesn’t say much. He calls us from different numbers. He is a conscript, he started last July. He definitely never signed a contract.”

A family member of crew member Evgeny Grinberg said via online messenger that “his condition is fine and I do not intend to divulge military secrets”.

“It’s fraught with consequences,” wrote Valery Grinburg of Monchegorsk, near Murmansk. “And Evgeny did not say anything anyway.”

Asked if he was onboard the ship, he wrote “yes” and then deleted the message. Asked how he knew about his relative’s condition, he wrote: “I called into the ministry of defence.”

But many others have been less lucky. Shkrebets was one of the first to go public demanding answers about why his son was sent to war. “They said that the entire crew was evacuated. It’s a lie! A cruel and cynical lie!”

His wife, Irina, told the independent Russian website the Insider that they had seen about 200 injured sailors at a military hospital in Crimea while looking for their son. The total crew of the Moskva was estimated at just over 500.

“We looked at every burnt kid,” she told the Insider. “I can’t tell you how hard it was, but I couldn’t find mine. There were only 200 people, and there were more than 500 onboard the cruiser. Where were the others? We looked in Krasnodar, and everywhere else, we called every place, but we couldn’t find him.”

Other families had reached out to the Shkrebets hoping to find more information.

“We were contacted by three families from Yalta, Alupka and St Petersburg, whose children are also missing, also conscripts,” her husband wrote on Monday, adding they had submitted a written request for more information at the local enlistment office.

“We need written answers to our questions about finding our children, not text messages with pictures and prayers,” he said.

Other parents were clearly more fearful of speaking out. Ulyana Tarasova of St Petersburg wrote online: “My son, Tarasov Mark, is missing in action aboard the cruiser Moskva.”

Hours later, her post was gone.

Others who spoke with Russian media have asked for anonymity for fear of facing reprisals from the government.

The mother of another sailor told the Novaya Gazeta Europe website that three missiles had struck the Moskva. She said about 40 people had died, several were missing, and “there are many wounded”.

Thank you for joining us from Indonesia.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has abruptly transformed the world. Millions of people have already fled. A new Iron Curtain is grinding into place. An economic war deepens, as the military conflict escalates, civilian casualties rise and evidence of horrific war crimes mounts.

01:57 Brooklyn subway suspect tipped off police to his location
The man accused of shooting 10 people on a Brooklyn subway train was arrested Wednesday and charged with a federal terrorism offense after the suspect himself called police to come get him, law enforcement officials said.

Frank R. James, 62, was taken into custody about 30 hours after the carnage on a rush-hour train, which left five victims in critical condition and people around the city on edge.

“My fellow New Yorkers, we got him,” Mayor Eric Adams said.

James was awaiting arraignment on a charge that pertains to terrorist or other violent attacks against mass transit systems and carries a sentence of up to life in prison, Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said.

In recent months, James railed in online videos about racism and violence in the U.S. and about his experiences with mental health care in New York City, and he had criticized Adams’ policies on mental health and subway safety. But the motive for the subway attack remains unclear, and there is no indication that James had ties to terror organizations, international or otherwise, Peace said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether James, who is from New York but has lived recently in Philadelphia and Milwaukee, has an attorney or anyone else who can speak for him. A sign taped to the door of James’ Milwaukee apartment asks that all mail be delivered to a post office box.

James, in a blue t-shirt and brown pants with his hands cuffed behind his back, didn’t respond to reporters shouting questions as police escorted him to a car a few hours after his arrest.

Police had launched a massive effort to find him, releasing his name and issuing cellphone alerts.

They got a tip Wednesday that he was in a McDonald’s in Manhattan’s East Village neighborhood, Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said.

The tipster was James, and he told authorities to come and get him, two law enforcement officials said. They weren’t authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

James was gone when officers arrived, but they soon spotted him on a busy corner nearby.

Four police cars zoomed around a corner, officers leaped out and, soon, a compliant James was in handcuffs as a crowd of people looked on, witness Aleksei Korobow said.

Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said authorities “were able to shrink his world quickly.”

“There was nowhere left for him to run,” she said.

The day before, James set off smoke grenades in a commuter-packed subway car and then fired at least 33 shots with a 9 mm handgun, police said.

Police Chief of Detectives James Essig said police were told that after James opened one of the smoke grenades, a rider asked, “What did you do?”

“Oops,” James said, then went on to brandish his gun and open fire, according to a witness account.

At least a dozen people who escaped gunshot wounds were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

As terrified riders fled the attack, James apparently hopped another train — the same one many were steered to for safety, police said. He got out at the next station, disappearing into the nation’s most populous city.

The shooter left behind numerous clues, including the gun, ammunition magazines, a hatchet, smoke grenades, gasoline and the key to a U-Haul van. That key led investigators to James.

Federal investigators determined the gun used in the shooting was purchased by James at a pawn shop — a licensed firearms dealer — in the Columbus, Ohio, area in 2011.

The van was found, unoccupied, near a station where investigators determined the gunman had entered the subway system. No explosives or firearms were found in the van, a law enforcement official who wasn’t authorized to comment on the investigation and did so on the condition of anonymity told The Associated Press. Police did find other items, including pillows, suggesting he may have been sleeping or planned to sleep in the van, the official said.

Investigators believe James drove up from Philadelphia on Monday and have reviewed surveillance video showing a man matching his physical description coming out of the van early Tuesday morning, the official said. Other video shows James entering a subway station in Brooklyn with a large bag, the official said.

In addition to analyzing financial and telephone records connected to James, investigators were reviewing hours of rambling, profanity-filled videos James posted on YouTube and other social media platforms as they tried to discern a motive.

In one video, posted a day before the attack, James, who is Black, criticizes crime against Black people and says drastic action is needed.

“You got kids going in here now taking machine guns and mowing down innocent people,” James says. “It’s not going to get better until we make it better,” he said, adding that he thought things would only change if certain people were “stomped, kicked and tortured” out of their “comfort zone.”

In another video he says, “this nation was born in violence, it’s kept alive by violence or the threat thereof and it’s going to die a violent death. There’s nothing going to stop that.”

His posts are replete with violent language and bigoted comments, some against Black people.

Sewell called the posts “concerning” and officials tightened security for Adams, who was already isolating following a positive COVID-19 test Sunday.

Several of James’ videos mention New York’s subways. A Feb. 20 video says the mayor and governor’s plan to address homelessness and safety in the subway system “is doomed for failure” and refers to himself as a “victim” of the city’s mental health programs. A Jan. 25 video criticizes Adams’ plan to end gun violence.

The Brooklyn subway station where passengers fled the smoke-filled train in the attack was open as usual Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after the violence.

Commuter Jude Jacques, who takes the D train to his job as a fire safety director some two blocks from the shooting scene, said he prays every morning but had a special request on Wednesday.

“I said, ‘God, everything is in your hands,’” Jacques said. “I was antsy, and you can imagine why. Everybody is scared because it just happened.”

13:13 Ukraine girds for Russian offensive in the east
LVIV, Ukraine, April 11 (Reuters) - Ukraine said on Monday it expects Russia to begin an offensive soon in the eastern Donbas region as Moscow shifts its focus to seizing territory there after its invasion force was driven from the gates of Kyiv this month.

Russia's main target in Donbas is the port of Mariupol, where thousands are believed to have died under a near-seven week siege. Russia is amassing thousands of troops in the area for a new assault, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

The first European Union leader to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in person since the war began, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, said following talks in Moscow that the offensive was "evidently being prepared on a massive scale".

Western sanctions on Moscow will intensify so long as the invasion persists, Nehammer said. "(Telling Putin) once will not be enough. Ten times will not be enough. It might have to be done 100 times," he told reporters. read more

After withdrawing forces from northern Ukraine, including suburbs of the capital Kyiv lain to waste under its occupation, Russia has turned its sights toward Donbas. It is demanding Ukraine cede control of territory there to separatist fighters, apparently one of Russia's major goals in what it calls a "special military operation" against its neighbour.

Capturing Mariupol, the main eastern port, would allow Moscow to link troops advancing from the east with those from Russian-annexed Crimea in the south and shift their focus to a new attempt to encircle the main Ukrainian force in the east.

The United States, which warns Moscow is trying to reinforce and resupply troops in Donbas, has sought to pressure Putin to withdraw his forces by banning Russian oil and gas and encouraging allies to follow suit.

But world powers including China and India have refrained from sanctioning Russia. Lured by steep oil discounts, India has purchased more Russian crude since the start of the Feb. 24 invasion than it did for the whole of last year, data compiled by Reuters shows. read more

In a video call, U.S. President Joe Biden told India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi "very clearly that it is not in their interest" to increase reliance on Russian energy, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said.

During a brief portion of the call open to reporters, Modi said he had suggested in recent talks with Russia that Putin and Zelenskiy hold direct negotiations.

MARIUPOL FIGHTING, RAPE AS WEAPON

Thousands have fled from the Donbas region.

In his latest plea for international support, Zelenskiy told South Korea's parliament that tens of thousands had already been killed in Mariupol, a figure that has not been confirmed independently. read more

Russia has repeatedly denied attacking civilians.

There were unconfirmed media reports on Monday suggesting chemical weapons were used in Mariupol. Zelenskiy warned in his nightly video address on Monday of potential Russian use of chemical weapons, but did not say that they had been used.

The number of people leaving Mariupol has fallen because Russian forces slowed pre-departure checks, said Petro Andryushchenko, an aide to the mayor of the city.

Around 10,000 people were awaiting screening by Russian forces, he said. Russia does not allow military personnel to leave with civilian evacuees. There was no comment from Moscow, which has previously blamed Ukraine for blocking evacuations.

Ukrainian fears intensified last week after 57 people were killed in a Russian missile strike on a train station in Donbas, where thousands were trying to flee the expected advance, Ukrainian officials said.

Moscow denied blame for the missile strike as well as Ukrainian and Western accusations that Russian forces committed war crimes north of Kyiv.

The United Nations is hearing accounts of rape and violence by both Russian and Ukrainian forces, U.N. officials said. read more

Kateryna Cherepakha, president of La Strada-Ukraine, said the rights group's emergency hotlines had received calls accusing Russian soldiers of nine cases of rape, involving 12 women and girls.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg," she told the U.N. Security Council via video. "We know and see - and we want you to hear our voices - that violence and rape is used now as a weapon of war by Russian invaders in Ukraine."

Russia's deputy U.N. ambassador denied the allegations and accused Ukraine and allies of "a clear intention to present Russian soldiers as sadists and rapists."

Ukraine's U.N. mission did not respond to a request for comment on allegations of sexual violence by Ukrainian forces and civil defence militias.

'NO PAUSE'

Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said Moscow would not pause the fighting for any new round of peace talks, which last convened on April 1.

"A decision was made that during the next rounds of talks, there would be no pause (in military action) so long as a final agreement is not reached," Lavrov said.

Britain's defence ministry said Russian shelling continued in Donbas. But Ukrainian forces had beaten back several assaults and destroyed Russian tanks, vehicles and artillery equipment, it added.

The governor of another eastern region, Luhansk, told Ukrainian television that shelling was increasing day by day and urged all civilians to evacuate.

"Those that wanted to leave have already left, while now many are left in bomb shelters who are perhaps frightened to come out of the shelters, or scared to lose their possessions," Governor Serhiy Gaidai said.

21:23 Nathaniel Hackett Is Ready to Build Something New With Russell Wilson and the Broncos
I was through about 20 minutes with new Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett, and that’s where he stopped me in my tracks. It was Saturday afternoon—he was fresh out of draft meetings, less than 72 hours away from the start of his first offseason program in Denver—and he might as well have been shot out of a cannon as he digested the point I’d been waiting to make with him.

Specifically, I asked if the challenge he’s facing is a little different than it is for most first-year coaches, since the great majority come into situations broken by definition—the job wouldn’t have been open otherwise—and, as such, might be afforded some semblance of a honeymoon phase.

“First and foremost I want to clarify something when you talk about from the ground up,” he said. “I don’t think that exists anymore. I think in this profession, because of the way that society is, everybody wants to win now. Look at what happened in Jacksonville [where he coached from 2015 to ’18]. We jumped in, we win, the next year we’re supposed to win the Super Bowl and I’m losing my job. So it’s like wherever you enter in, you gotta win, or you at least have to show signs of getting better and showing improvement to be able to win.

“You can’t be getting blown out. You can’t look like a fool. You gotta have people in sync, working together. And as a leader, you have to point that out. Even through adversity, there are things that are very good that come from that. For us, when we went into Green Bay, it was the same pressure to win that I had at Jacksonville. Nothing was going to, ‘Hey, Blake Bortles played so great, he got a contract …’ No. S—, you gotta win.”

A new era is underway in Denver, and it hits another checkpoint this week.

In-depth analysis, unrivaled access. Get SPORTS ILLUSTRATED's best stories every weekday. Sign up now.

On Tuesday morning, new quarterback Russell Wilson and most (if not all) of the players making up the roster that helped lure him to Colorado a couple months ago will spill through the doors in Dove Valley to kick off the 42-year-old Hackett’s first offseason program as a head coach. What they find when they get there will be, to be sure, a little bit different than what most are used to.

And really, getting the guys to feel that is where Hackett’s going to start this week.

“You want them to feel an environment that they want to come into, and they’re excited to come into,” he continued. “That’s all you can do, that’s what you’re trying to create. My philosophy is I want everything we’re doing now—it’s voluntary, it’s all voluntary, so I want them to be excited to come into the building. That’s my job; my job is to make it so that they’re like, Hey, I’m really excited to come, and say hi, and ask questions and learn a new system, and get ready to win some football games.”

From there, everyone, including Hackett, knows the score. The Broncos went into the offseason believing, after GM George Paton’s first year, they were close to contention. Wilson’s decision to weaponize his no-trade clause and steer himself to them was only more affirmation of that, and Hackett, you can be certain, isn’t running from it.

So, no, he won’t ask for a honeymoon. As he said, he hasn’t gotten them in the past, and he doesn’t want one now.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a very deliberate plan that’s playing out.

We’re back and, just a little over two weeks away from the draft, we have a lot to cover this week—with some serious news and some tragic news mixed in with everything we normally get to. Inside this week’s MMQB column, you’ll find …

• A look at who the late Dwanye Haskins was.

• More on the latest developments in Brian Flores’s lawsuit against the NFL.

• A trend that’s affecting the way draft prospects are assessed by teams.

And a lot more. But we’re starting with the Broncos, as the players prepare for their first steps in the new program that Hackett’s establishing in Denver.

This World According to Nathaniel look at where the Broncos are going, and where they’ll take their new quarterback, starts with how he plans to start with his players this week, in giving them a window into what they’re in for. And that begins with this fact: He’s got no sсript for Tuesday morning.

It’s not that he’s going to go up there and wing it. He knows the points he wants to make. It’s just that the idea of standing in front of the room doesn’t exactly scare him.

He saw his dad do it as a kid, as the head coach at Pitt and then USC, sure. But more than just that, it’s Hackett’s unique background that’s led him to know how to present himself to a crowd. Hackett lettered in forensics (which is competitive acting, and something I didn’t know you could letter in) all four years of high school—“I made it on the varsity team my freshman year and I did it all four years”—and taught hip-hop dance on a whim his last year in college, when he needed just a 10-hour lab to finish his neurobiology degree.

Hackett applied that experience over the last 12 years, more than 10 of which were spent as a coordinator, in addressing his offenses. He’s seen what works and what doesn’t with other coaches. “There are people that get nervous going in front of a group,” he says. “I think my [emotion] has always been excitement.” And he projects that excitement, because what he’s seen fail, fails because “they couldn’t keep the attention of the audience.”

“Even when I went back to the teachers I had growing up with, through college and high school, it was the class you loved the most where the teachers were the most exciting and the most fun,” he said. “I just wanted to bring that once I got my opportunity in 2010 [at Syracuse], and I think that was a big part of how all the places I’ve been are; we’ve kind of unified people together. The ability to get up and just talk and communicate and be strong and exciting and fun is, that’s just something I’ve always had.

“So when people say, ‘What are you going to do in that first meeting?’ It’s like, ‘I don’t know, s---, I’m going to have a PowerPoint and I’m going to be me.’ And half the time, I never know what’s going to happen up there. Because you gotta feel the room. You can’t say it’s going to be like this, you can’t say it’s going to be that. It’s them understanding who I am and understanding this is how it’s going to be now.”

And to get them to buy into that, he knows he’ll have to be two things in front of them—captivating and interactive. The former, because that’s the baseline in holding their attention. The latter, because he wants them to work toward owning the information he’s giving them.

“At the same time that you’re captivating, you also have to make sure that everybody’s integrated,” he continued. “You don’t want to speak to people, you want to have it be an open forum, always. The guys that I’ve heard that are the best speakers are guys like Bill Clinton. The reason why, I can be in a room, you’re dealing with football, you’re dealing with every personality, we’re talking alpha males, we’re talking from every different background, and you have to be able to get up and speak to every single one of them.

“I think that that’s something that people have always said that Bill Clinton was so great at. He could go into a room, and he could talk to so many people. [Barack] Obama, when he looks at you and he talks to you, it’s like he’s talking to you individually, even though you’re surrounded by people that might not be like you.”

And Hackett knows it can't just be him. All of his coaches have to connect with the players that way. “That was why I think we had such an unbelievable time at Green Bay. I really do,” he said. “Our Green Bay stuff went to another f------ level. I think every place is different, I don’t know what level it’s going to get to here.”

What he does know is to find out, he’ll have to empower his staff to make that connection like Matt LaFleur did in Green Bay. Which sets the stage for where they’ll take it after that.

Hackett initially went to Green Bay in 2019 after being fired in Jacksonville, looking to learn as much as he could about the Shanahan scheme, knowing that in joining up with LaFleur he’d get to work with a guy who was raised in that system. And he got that, for sure, over the last three years, while giving back his own background in the West Coast offense, which synced up with what Aaron Rodgers came up with under Mike McCarthy.

But maybe more important were lessons he learned on how a staff can push its own limits.

“What we did in Green Bay is incredible,” he said. “Really, I don’t think anybody could ever put it into perspective, at least from my opinion, how amazing it was. And it started with Matt building an offensive staff that was young, that wanted to do it the right way, that was humble, wanted to soak up as much knowledge as possible, and was just dying to teach it the way Matt wanted it taught.

“And then you had me, who was a veteran, and hungry to learn the system, incorporate the stuff that I had done to help the system, and then at the same time, teach the coaches how to teach. That kind of was my role, guiding them in that.”

The big thing he and all the position coaches who’ve become coordinators (Justin Outten with him in Denver, Luke Getsy in Chicago and now Adam Stenavich replacing him in Green Bay) came to emphasize, was making sure the players understood the “why” of what was being taught, which required those assistants knowing the offense like LaFleur did, to the point where they could continue to evolve it.

That’s why, over our hour-long conversation, Hackett kept going back to how what he saw in his ex-college teammate (and now defensive coordinator) Ejiro Evero, his old staffmate from the bottom rungs in Tampa under Jon Gruden (and special teams coordinator) Dwayne Stukes and his Packer import (and offensive coordinator) Outten was that each knew how to teach. And that’s why over the last two months, as they built up the systems collectively, it’s been done with the knowledge that part of teaching is getting the most out of students.

So that ability to evolve and adjust a scheme? That comes into play, starting this week.

“I haven’t been with the players at all. I don’t know the players,” Hackett said. “I don’t know Russell. I don’t know what Russell likes. And truly, you don’t know. You try your hardest [to project] but even Russell is probably going to like different stuff. We don’t have DK Metcalf now, so he’s gotta find stuff for Cortland [Sutton] and Tim [Patrick] and [Jerry] Jeudy and Javonte [Williams] and all these guys. That’s a process.

“Look at basketball, look when LeBron goes somewhere new. I mean, it’s not like they jump right in and win it. People have to mold together. The idea is to get that mold to happen as fast as you possibly can. We did a great job finding ways to win games that first year [in Green Bay]. And then that second year is where I felt like it was the best offense I’ve ever been a part of.”

Hackett still calls his 2019 debut as Packers offensive coordinator on a Thursday night against Chicago a “s---show.” He cited a one-point win over the Lions in Week 6 that year as another night to forget. But because LaFleur’s staff had given the players the reasoning for doing what they were doing, and simply asked for faith that it’d work, the guys kept working, trusting that the breakthrough was coming.

“Aaron started buying in,” Hackett said. “He started realizing, hey, we’re here to help him. We want him to be great. We want the team to be great with him. We want to take advantage of Davante [Adams]. We want to take advantage of Bobby Tonyan, MVS [Marques Valdez-Scantling], G-Mo [Geronimo Allison], all those guys. I don’t know how much different it was from the regime before us, I just know that those guys bought into us.

“And then of course, when you start winning a couple games, it helps.”

Week 7 wound up being the turning point for those Packers, Rodgers completed 25-of-31 throws for 429 yards and five touchdowns in a 42–24 rout of the Raiders. Hackett refers to it as a “perfect game,” and the quarterback’s passer rating (158.3) reflected that. There were still bumps from there. But Green Bay wound up 13–3 and then made it to the NFC title game.

The next offseason, Hackett said, with full knowledge of the players, and having seen the offense against a full season's worth of defensive looks, the staff went back in and truly created what would become the Packers’ version of the Shanahan offense. Rodgers has been league MVP in both years since.

Which is a pretty good blueprint for Hackett and his staff to work off of with Wilson.

Obviously, there are reasons, lots of them, why Hackett wanted Wilson in Denver.

“You look at a guy who throws an absolutely amazing deep ball, so anytime a defense knows you have a chance to throw the ball deep—anytime—that’s exciting,” he said. “That was the fun thing about being with Aaron, too, when they know you can make plays in the vertical passing game, that’s exciting. And you’ve seen him play, he throws one of the best deep balls in the game. The next thing is watching his escapability, it’s not always going to be perfect, so having a guy that can create, that makes coaches look good. …

“And then finally, he just f------ loves the game. You want to be around a guy that is as hungry as you are as a coach, because coaches don’t get to play. When players aren’t as into it as we are, it’s hard. So when you get a quarterback that’s as into it as we are as coaches, I mean, that’s a dream come true.”

Add that up, and you’ve got a heck of a baseline to work off of.

But, for now, Hackett knows that’s all it is—a baseline. So he’ll take the lessons he learned from coaching Rodgers—and also guys like Ryan Nassib, E.J. Manuel, Kyle Orton and Bortles, lessons that taught Hackett that every quarterback is different—with him as he gets going with another Super Bowl champion.

And then there are the things he learned specifically from working with the two-time reigning MVP the last couple of years that, really, he couldn’t have gotten anywhere else, outside of maybe Tampa, to prepare him for what’s ahead with Wilson.

“What my dad has always talked about, it’s a ‘can’t stop me’ mentality; you have to find that and give it to the quarterback,” Hackett said. “Aaron taught me that you have to respect and listen to what he has to say, because of how much he’s accomplished in what he’s done before he was with me. Whether I believed in it or not, you have to be sure, what a great quarterback does, that you respect that. You have to understand that they see things, they’re out there, and you have to find out what they see, you have to learn what they see.

“I think the fun thing about working with Aaron, and our relationship was really strong early, was that I was able to talk with him and hear from him and learn about him. That’s the thing I’m so excited about with Russell now. Russell, I want him to open up. I want to understand what he’s looking at, I want to understand what he’s thinking, I want to know why he’s doing something.”

Which is to say that, with a player of that level, while the coach is still teaching, he’s also learning, and the player is more partner than pupil.

“One-hundred percent,” Hackett said. “I would say that my relationship with Aaron, especially during game days and the preparation process to get to game day, was a pure partnership. And it was like that with Matt too. It was Matt, me and Aaron, and with Getsy, it was all about, ‘Hey, let’s put this thing together—together.’ And that’s what I need to do, that’s the process with Russell now. It’s, Look, I have tons of different things we can do.”

And so will begin the process of paring down, and adjusting, and tweaking everything that Hackett and his staff worked to build up the last couple months. It’ll take time, like it did in Green Bay, and trial-and-error against different defenses, and with different guys in different spots. It’ll take trust, too, for the guys on the field to ride out the kinds of bumps that are inevitable with any new staff putting in a new system with new players.

But Hackett’s betting on his own experience that the Broncos will get there.

Hackett understands, too, that trust he and his staff are looking for will have to be earned, starting on Tuesday. That’s another reason why, when he stands at the front of the room, he’s going to be himself, and not reading off a sсript.

He needs the players to buy into him—and into Outten, Evero and Stukes—and he knows that’ll only happen if he’s himself. He also doesn’t want to make the biggest deal of this week—Hackett joked he needs to save his best material for December and the playoff push—but he does want the players to know what they’re signing up for.

And if the Wilson trade didn’t make the goals here clear enough, he’s happy to spell it out.

“I mean in the end, all I care about is winning football games,” he said. “So it’s more about, I’m very excited that they’re going to be in the building and we get to start working towards that goal—and I’m glad that I’m the one that gets to address them.”

Fair to say, with a long road ahead, he’s at least got that part covered.

HASKINS’S IMPACT GOES BEYOND NFL

Ohio State’s coaches had been trying to get Dwayne Haskins back to Columbus for a big recruiting weekend at the start of April and were hopeful that he’d make it back for the spring game on April 16. But there was this lingering feeling there that Haskins—holder of most of the blue-blooded program’s single-season passing records—really hadn’t been back to campus much for a reason.

Simply put, some believed he didn’t want to return until he got his pro career right, and that he’d be back, and playing a more prominent role, whenever that happened.

That, of course, isn’t to say his impact wasn’t being felt in the program. Through quarterback trainer Quincy Avery, he’d built a relationship, and had been in touch, with the current Buckeyes quarterback, and another Heisman finalist, C.J. Stroud. He’d maintained close relationships he had with guys on staff, like Ryan Day, who was the offensive coordinator for his supernova season of 2018. And he was there when he was needed—just a couple of weeks back, he drove two hours to see a struggling former OSU teammate of his.

But as far as being more visible at Ohio State, it seemed to those at the school as if it was important to him that he restore his name as a football player before he came back to take any bows for what he’d accomplished as a collegian. And there was a genuine feeling that, over the last year, Haskins was finally turning a corner as a professional, and that the day was coming when he’d be able to proudly return.

Tragically, no one will ever know where all of that was going.

Haskins died Saturday morning after being hit by a dump truck, crossing lanes on foot on I-595 near Fort Lauderdale. He’d been in South Florida to work out with new Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky and a host of his offensive teammates. He was 24 years old.

Details surrounding his death, and why he was on foot on the highway, remain murky. Those will be sorted out in the coming days.

What’s been made obvious, on the other hand, over the last 48 hours is the sort of affection those who knew Haskins through football had for him. And for as many stories as I heard about Haskins as a player over the weekend, I heard as many about things he’d quietly done for someone, or how proud he was of his little sister or the way he used to stay behind on family nights on Thursdays back at Ohio State to play with the coaches’ kids.

In more ways than one, Haskins still was a big kid, genuine and kind, and also having a lot of growing up to do. And again, those close to him were hopeful over the last year that that growth was happening, and that Haskins would get another swing at becoming the franchise quarterback Washington thought it was drafting in 2019.

So his NFL legacy will remain where it is: Haskins didn’t make it with his hometown team, was benched during his second year and eventually released late that season before signing with Pittsburgh in hopes of turning his career around.

His impact on the college game, on the other hand, ran deeper. It’s easy to argue that he changed the face of quarterbacking at Ohio State forever, after annihilating the Big Ten record books in 2018 (his 50 TD passes broke Drew Brees’s single-season conference record of 39 while his 4,939 yards of total offense shattered Denard Robinson’s previous mark of 4,272). He was the first Buckeye QB taken in the first round in 37 years, and his breakout season helped attract Justin Fields to the program, which opened a pipeline of blue-chip quarterbacking talent to Columbus.

It’s also fair to look at how his success in that single season raised the ante on how offense is played in the Big Ten as a whole. And why it happened was because Haskins was as pure a thrower of the football as the conference’s most successful program had ever seen.

But over the weekend, the stories I heard about Haskins kept coming back to who he was as a person, more than who he’d been as a player.

“I wouldn’t even say it was a different side of him away from the field, because he truly was the most genuine person all the time,” said one of his close confidants in Columbus on Sunday. “He was always happy; he had this infectious, contagious smile. Anytime he’d walk into a room, he just seemed like the happiest guy there. And even if he did have a bad day, you’d never know it in how he carried himself.”

And at the same time, he was acutely aware of his successes and failures, and their impact.

So it was that I heard the story on Sunday of the Illinois game in 2017. The Buckeyes blew out the Illini, 52–14, on what was a rainy, ugly day at Ohio Stadium. In the fourth quarter, with the game in hand, Haskins came on to replace J.T. Barrett and almost right away missed an easy check, where he was supposed to flip the protection, and took a snap. Soon thereafter, he ran the ball and fumbled. As bad as a backup could play in garbage time, that was Haskins that day, and he knew it and reacted accordingly.

The coaches saw a light turn on for him the following week, with Ohio State headed to Ann Arbor to play archrival Michigan. Haskins buried himself in his work, even with little chance he’d see the field. And sure enough, Barrett got hurt during the game that Saturday, and Haskins made big play after big play to lead a come-from-behind win over the Wolverines.

Joe Burrow was sidelined with a hand injury at the time, and some believe that Haskins winning the job from Burrow the following spring started with the egg Haskins laid against Illinois—and how he’d responded as so many things seemed to blow up in his face.

The hope was, years later, that his work with the Steelers after his time in Washington would play out the same way, with a bad result opening the door for better days to come. Haskins, at least on the surface, seemed optimistic to everyone around him that it’d play out that way, and that maybe, just maybe, he could make a run at the starting job in Pittsburgh, with Ben Roethlisberger gone, in 2022.

It’s terrible that Haskins never got to see that through, and a whole lot worse that a father and mother are left without a son, and a sister is left without a brother.

And in the end, if you want a picture of who Haskins was as a person, looking at his relationship with that sister, Tamia, is a good place to start. I mentioned this on Twitter the other day, and I’ll link it here too: The Big Ten Network did a nice job detailing the bond the two had during that wild fall of 2018 and, in doing so, giving insight into the sort of person the young quarterback was.

RIP, Dwayne.

TEN TAKEAWAYS

To me, the most damning piece of evidence in the additions to Brian Flores’s lawsuit came from ex-Titans coach Mike Mularkey. You may have read what he said, and how he took the Steelers Realm podcast through what he called a “fake hiring process” as Tennessee was preparing to remove the interim tag and make him the team’s full-time head coach: “The GM, Jon Robinson, he was in on the interview with me; he had no idea why he was interviewing me, because I had the job already.” Here’s the audio, if you missed it (it’s definitely worth a listen).

This, of course, more or less lays bare what minority coaches have complained about for years—that the Rooney Rule requirements, for some, have become nothing more than a box-checking exercise—because here you have a white coach basically volunteering the information without specifically being asked for it, and doing that because he saw even in the moment how screwed up the whole thing was. And while there might not be a great way to police this sort of thing (teams are going to hire who they want to hire), it certainly should ramp up the scrutiny on hires that might be preordained, like Mularkey’s was.

Then, there’s the fact that Steve Wilks and Ray Horton felt empowered to speak up in the first place, joining Flores on the island he’s inhabited since filing the lawsuit. What Flores first, and the other two since, have done is provide cover for others who might see wrongdoing but would hesitate to call it out, something that’s particularly meaningful in the case of Wilks, who was gainfully employed by a team (the Panthers) as he did it.

We’ll see what happens long-term in the lawsuit. What I do think we can say for now, though, is that the events of this week should have an impact in creating a more transparent process going forward—both in how the league legislates the interview process and how those involved in it speak about it publicly—which is something plenty of folks have been calling for the last couple of years.

The way teams are looking at players is changing. This one’s rooted in my conversation for Friday’s GamePlan column with ex-Vikings GM Rick Spielman—who brought up on his own as we were discussing the absolute explosion of receiver talent into the draft through the last four or so cycles.

“I think it’s a product of the way college football is now,” he said. “Everything from the college level, you see it trickle up to our league, because our league is adapting to the athletes that are coming out at the college level. People are adjusting a little bit. The biggest adjustment I’ve ever seen was in Baltimore, with [John] Harbaugh and Greg Roman, they adjusted everything to fit [Lamar] Jackson’s traits as a quarterback.

“So I think, as these guys come up into our league, teams are looking more and more at how we can adjust and tweak things, and make sure that we’re doing things that are to these kids’ strengths, not to these guys’ weaknesses.”

Which, Spielman argued, has made it easier for receivers to make an instant impact—the first receiver taken last year, Ja’Marr Chase, had 81 catches for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns; and the second one to go, Jaylen Waddle, finished with 104 catches for 1,015 yards and six scores. And that’s even though Chase opted out of the 2020 college season, and Waddle, due to injury, barely played in it.

Now, obviously, as Spielman said, the position where we’re seeing it most is at quarterback, with Jackson and the Ravens providing a prime example. But there’s flexibility elsewhere, too, that didn’t exist before. And that makes this period critical for teams, in talking to players at all positions to see how the team might be able to meet a guy with premium talent in the middle from a scheme standpoint.

“That’s why the meetings with the coaches are so important,” Spielman said. “It’s not scouts scout, and coaches, we’ll bring them in and you coach them anymore. It has to be a very collaborative effort, because the scouts can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the player, but the coaches, when they come in and they start doing the evaluation, they have to give the direction on it—this guy’s gonna fit our scheme or we can potentially adjust something to fit this guy’s skill set. That’s why it’s so important.

“It has to be such a collaborative effort between the personnel and coaching sides. … Andy Reid, he’s adjusted to what [Patrick] Mahomes can do. You’re seeing a lot of coaches adjust, and have some flexibility. They have their base in what their system is, but how can we tweak it to help this guy come in and play at his best level?”

It’s a question that’s logical, of course. And it’s good for the game in general that it’s being asked a lot more at this time of year. Because it’s giving some pretty exciting talents a great springboard into their pro careers—which is good for everyone.

The timing of games is becoming a factor in injury spillover from one season to the next. The college football national title game was played on January 10. The Super Bowl was staged on February 13. Both dates are later than they used to be in the calendar, and that fact is not without consequence in both free agency and the draft. Nearly a month after he hit the market, Rams WR Odell Beckham Jr. remains unsigned. And Alabama’s Jameson Williams, who was projected back in December and early January to be the first receiver taken in the 2022 draft because of his rare score-from-anywhere type of explosiveness, may now have a much longer than expected wait on the first night of the draft. Both tore ACLs in their final games. And for teams kicking tires on them, it’s a very real thing to consider.

• In Beckham’s case, if you take the standard nine-month recovery timetable (to be actually playing full-speed) as the marker, you’re talking about signing him to start playing in mid-November, and even that would be trusting the health of a knee that’s undergone two reconstructive surgeries in a 16-month span (the ACL Beckham tore is the same one he tore in October 2020). Beckham, by the way, happens to turn 30 in November, and last had a 1,000-yard year in ’19. So if you sign him to a one-year, make-good deal, you may be counting on something short-term that’s no sure thing; and if you do a two- or three-year deal, you’re counting on him rebounding in what’ll be his 10th season, at 31 years old.

• Williams’s case is, obviously, a lot different. But because of the learning curve a rookie faces coming into the NFL, even though his injury happened a month before Beckham’s, you’re looking at a similarly steep climb to productivity in 2022. And if the thought is that this year might be a de facto redshirt year, then you have to take the status of the people picking into account—and specifically ask, Are their jobs on the line? If they are, it might not make sense to draft Williams. And as you might imagine, there are more GMs and coaches in that position toward the top of the draft.

Anyway, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with these two. I asked a scout the other day if he views Williams and Michigan pass rusher David Ojabo, who tore his Achilles last month at his pro day, differently, and he said he did: “I’d rather draft an ACL than an Achilles.” Which, of course, illustrates the fact that, sure, ACL injuries aren’t viewed the way they were years ago. But in these cases, because of timing, they most certainly are a factor, and they’d be less so if those injuries happened even a few weeks earlier.

Contracts always tell you the story—and they most certainly do in the case of Trubisky. I will start here by saying that I do think the Steelers want to give the former first-round pick a very real look. But the nitty gritty of the contract he signed in Pittsburgh shows that there’s zero reason to believe the team will hesitate to take a quarterback in the first round, if one that outgoing GM Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin like falls to them. Here are the details on Trubisky’s deal …

• Base value: Two years, $14.285 million.

• Signing bonus: $5.25 million.

• $8.5 million total in incentives (so value up to $22.785 million over two years).

• $4 million each year in play-time incentives (triggers start at 60% of the snaps).

• $250,000 Pro Bowl incentive in each year.

So that means if Trubisky doesn’t hit any of his incentives (unlikely, unless he fails to win the starting job), then his APY (average per year) cost, $7.14 million, will be less than what Kyler Murray, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance are making on their rookie deals. And if he hits all those incentives (also unlikely, because he’d have to be a first-ballot Pro Bowler in the loaded AFC), his APY number would be $11.39 million, which is solidly between what Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota make. So it’s a bargain if Trubisky hits, while it allows for the possibility that the Steelers take a swing on someone like Malik Willis in a few weeks, if that appeals to them. Good business by the Steelers.

A lot of people are waiting for a second-order move by the Saints, after last week’s trade with the Eagles. Maybe it’ll happen. But I just don’t see the logic in it, at least at this point. For those who missed the ins and outs, a week ago, New Orleans sent first-, third- and seventh-round picks (18, 101, 237), its 2023 first-rounder and 2024 second-rounder to Philly for the 16th and 19th picks, plus a sixth-rounder (194) this year. In the MAQB, we broke down how if you split the whole thing into two trades, it looks pretty ugly for the Saints. And that sort of logic had some deducing that this might be part of a plan from Saints GM Mickey Loomis to make a bigger move into the top 10.

Maybe it is. My question then would be … why did the Saints need the Eagles to play middleman? The draft value chart shows that the Saints could spin the 16th and 19th picks to get up into the top four. But this year, with perception (and maybe reality) that the top 10 lacks real blue-chippers, more teams up there are looking to move picks to next year—so my guess is if the real plan here was to get into the upper reaches of the draft, then packaging the 18th pick with next year’s first-rounder alone might’ve gotten it done (and you’d have saved yourself moving this year’s third-rounder and the 2024 second-rounder). Again, maybe Loomis will do what some think he will and spin the capital he just got to move up. But it seems to me it’s more likely that the Saints did this to get to three picks inside the top 50 (16, 19, 49), allowing them to lean on Jeff Ireland and his staff to find three starters to come in on rookie contracts and help alleviate the team’s cap strain now and in the future, and bolster a team that’s still got a roster that’s very much in a win-now type of place. (And for what it’s worth, Loomis, entering his 21st season as Saints GM, hasn’t shown much inclination, publicly or privately, to rip the Band-Aid off cap-wise and undergo a post–Drew Brees and Sean Payton rebuild).

Eagles GM Howie Roseman isn’t perfect, but man is he good with these sorts of trades. And as we go ahead and tally up all of his draft capital, remember that Philly was in the playoffs last year. So it’s not like they’re on the front end of a rebuild (though the roster does most certainly need to get younger).

• 2022: Two top-20 picks, one from Miami, the other from the Colts, as a result of the Jaylen Waddle and Carson Wentz trades. And five picks in the top 101, with the final one coming as a result of the Saints trade.

• 2023: Two first-round picks, with the second one coming from New Orleans (which landed the Eagles’ slotted first-rounder from this year in the trade).

• 2024: Three picks in the first two rounds, with the second second-rounder coming from the Saints.

And really, if you look at the nine top-64 picks they have, the Eagles generated all of that out of Wentz (who bombed in his only year in Indy) and a move down six spots in last year’s draft (where they wound up with DeVonta Smith, after a short trade up, from 12 to 10, to follow). Now, obviously, Wentz coming undone was central to all of this, and that absolutely wasn’t an ideal result. But knowing when to pull the plug on Wentz was important, and Roseman did, and now Philly’s in a really nice spot, thanks to all this asset management, to infuse real youth into its aging roster. And if the Eagles need to make a move at quarterback in the next year or two, the capital’s there to do that, too.

The Panthers have an important three-day stretch ahead. Six quarterbacks—Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, Liberty’s Malik Willis, Ole Miss’s Matt Corral, North Carolina’s Sam Howell, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder and Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe—are scheduled to come in on a staggered schedule between Monday morning and Wednesday to meet with coach Matt Rhule, GM Scott Fitterer and the rest of the Carolina braintrust in Charlotte. And by just about any account you’ll get, taking one of them sixth, where the Panthers are picking, sets up to be a little bit of a reach. Which is just the first part of the predicament that Carolina finds itself in …

• The decision after last year’s draft to execute Sam Darnold’s $18.858 million option for this year has hung over the Panthers’ brass this offseason. It makes it, without question, more difficult to take on a Baker Mayfield (trading for him would be similar to trading for Darnold, and the financial cost is the same) or a Jimmy Garoppolo (at $24.6 million).

• The Darnold trade itself, in addition to the trade for C.J. Henderson, left the Panthers with a gap in picks that runs from the top of the first round (No. 6) to the late stages of the fourth (137). So using the sixth pick on a nonquarterback would likely mean, absent a major trade, punting on the top five QBs all together.

• The draft-pick deficit also makes trading for someone like Garoppolo even more difficult.

• The Panthers last made the playoffs in 2017, and are 22–43 since, which was enough to drive away two available franchise quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson, who grew up within a four-hour drive of Charlotte.

• Their still relatively new owner, David Tepper, has been completely silent on football matters this offseason, leaving the status of those leading the football operation up to the imagination of big-name veteran players and their agents—creating at least an appearance of instability that has hurt their standing in the eyes of those people.

Add together then the financial complications of Darnold, the inability to attract a proven star at the position and the hot-seat element, and you have a team that’s been driven into a corner where, outside of a swallow-hard trade for Garoppolo (and his injury timetable is relevant, given that the Panthers have Ben McAdoo introducing a new offense), it feels like using the sixth pick on a quarterback is the only way out, which isn’t where you want to be. Do I think Rhule and Fitterer are married to the idea? No, I do not, especially when you consider the history of those guys. And to be clear, I still think those two absolutely can be the right guys for the organization. But if they’re going to prove it, how they manage draft weekend, and the quarterback position as part of it, will be important.

The four star receivers from Day 2 of the 2019 draft bear watching. The news this week was on Deebo Samuel scrubbing the Niners from his Instagram—because that’s how players make a point in 2022. But the reality is that Samuel’s situation is a microcosm of the challenges facing not just the Niners, but also the Titans, Seahawks and Commanders. And those challenges are real thanks to deals signed by Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs over the last months. Back-end funny money aside, here’s what those three are getting from the Dolphins, Raiders and Bills in base pay over the next three years …

• Hill: $72.41 million

• Diggs: $68 million

• Adams: $67.51 million

That makes the APY range for those three, over the most relevant period, $22.5 million to $24.2 million. To be sure, Samuel, A.J. Brown, DK Metcalf and Terry McLaurin are really good players. Are they worth going well past $20 million per year to keep? Is any receiver, in an era where it’s easier to find one than ever before, worth that much? It’s a question that the Bills, Packers and Chiefs had to contemplate, and two of those three teams wound up trading their star playmakers away. So I don’t know if things in the negotiations for the four guys from the 2019 draft will get to the point where a trade might happen. I think all four teams are hopeful they can just extend those guys instead. But until they do, my guess would be the phone will keep ringing in those four places.

With the biggest part of free agency done, it’s time for a salary cap update. And it actually could matter this year, with a glut of accomplished 30-somethings still out there on the market, waiting for the right time to find a new home.

So here are the 10 teams with the most cap space (as of Sunday) in the league …

Panthers: $30.02 million

Texans: $22.00 million

Colts: $21.70 million

Saints: $20.82 million

Browns: $20.49 million

Dolphins: $19.87 million

Chargers: $18.89 million

Lions: $18.39 million

Bengals: $18.31 million

Chiefs: $18.12 million

And the 10 teams with the least cap space …

Patriots: $999K

49ers: $1.49 million

Titans: $2.12 million

Falcons: $2.76 million

Buccaneers: $4.24 million

Raiders: $4.88 million

Giants: $5.52 million

Cardinals: $5.80 million

Rams: $6.89 million

Jaguars: $6.91 million

To me, I think the numbers here make the Colts, Saints and Browns interesting suitors for some of the older free agents out there (and in Cleveland’s case, there’s certainly plenty of room left over to bring back guys like Jarvis Landry and Jadeveon Clowney).

I have my quick takeaways from what was (thankfully) a slower week in the NFL. And those, as always, are right here for you at the end of the takeaways section.

• Corral has scheduled a Wednesday visit with the Eagles, and that one at least interests me, maybe because it’s the only quarterback whom I’ve heard Philly is bringing in.

• There isn’t a better pro out there than Calais Campbell, which is why his decision to spend the late stages of his career in Baltimore makes so much sense. Great fit of team and player, and good to see the big man back there on a new two-year deal.

• We mentioned this Friday—but it was also good to see Brandin Cooks rewarded, after going through so much with concussion issues the last few years. He’s exactly the kind of guy who can be a locker-room conduit/messenger for a new head coach coming in. I’m sure Lovie Smith would agree that he’s lucky to have him back and locked in with a new contract.

• Keep an eye on Georgia safety Lewis Cine. He’s one player who could sneak in the back end of the first round and be perhaps the second guy taken at his position, maybe in front of Michigan’s Daxton Hill.

• I was talking to a scout the other day about Aidan Hutchinson, and how maybe he’ll get stereotyped a little bit, and he asked a great question: “When did being an overachiever become a bad thing?” In these cases, I understand that it relates to whether a player has maxed out his potential. Still, it’s a really good thing to think about.

• As you saw above, the Rams aren’t flush with cap space, now or going forward. (They have $205.58 million committed to 40 players for 2023 and $193.2 million committed to 18 guys in ’24, per Spotrac.) Sure, they’re really good at working around these constraints. Still, it’ll make looming contract adjustments for Cooper Kupp and Aaron Donald pretty interesting.

• What’s fascinating to me about the position the Bucs are in now is how, for the first time, they’ll be leaning on players they’ve drafted since acquiring Tom Brady to take on elevated roles as a result of natural attrition. Among that smattering of guys: RT Tristan Wirfs, S Antoine Winfield, WRs Tyler Johnson and Jaelon Darden, and OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

• Years ago, the Eagles became the first team to assign one of their college scouts to monitor college basketball as part of his job. And there’s no doubt it’s brought an under-every-rock ethos to the scouting department that leads them to guys like left tackle Jordan Mailata. The latest? Two-time Olympic hurdler Devon Allen, who signed there last week.

• Good on Darnold for projecting confidence during his appearance this week on the Barstool podcast Bussin’ with the Boys. But did anyone catch this line from him? “I know there’s a team that, if something happened, would want me,” he told Will Compton and Taylor Lewan. That’s interesting … and Seattle was the first team I thought of.

• If you missed what Spielman said in my Friday column on the draft about Oregon DE Kayvon Thibodeaux, check it out. This could change, but I have a hard time, and I know people in the league do, too, seeing the personality match between him and the Lions’ new brass. And I doubt Houston will take him. So he could slide, at least a little, from where he was perceived to be a few months back (some presumed in the fall he was destined to go No. 1).

SIX FROM THE SIDELINE

1) I’ve got another TV recommendation for you—WeCrashed on Apple TV+. I’m through four episodes, and I’ll venture to say it’s as good as the last show I recommended for all of you (The Dropout on Hulu).

2) Really cool seeing our old colleague Robert Klemko doing such meaningful work for The Washington Post in war-torn Ukraine. Keep going, Bob!

3) I could declare the Red Sox’ season over now, but enough of you know where that got me last year. So I’ll withhold judgment … for now.

4) It’s bananas seeing a LeBron James team missing the playoffs. Also wild that it’s happened twice in four years since he became a Laker, after he made it in each of the 13 seasons (and getting to the Finals in nine of those years) before his arrival in Los Angeles. I know he has business interests out there, and it’s obviously a good place to live, but is it fair to ask if … a separation would be best for everyone now?

5) What a great competitor Tiger Woods is. He clearly wasn’t 100%, and had some tough moments out there, but he just kept coming. And while things did unravel over the weekend, the fact that he could make the cut at the Masters at 46 years old, 14 months after a catastrophic car accident, and without having played much competitive golf since, is astounding.

6) Scottie Scheffler seems like a nice enough guy. And I guess it’s a fun story line that he went to the same high school Matthew Stafford and Clayton Kershaw did (not an accident it keeps happening, Google can help you there). But that final round was enough to make the annual Sunday Masters nap last all day.

04:11 Juventus vs. Cagliari match preview: Time, TV schedule, and how to watch the Serie A
Gone is the Serie A unbeaten run that spanned over the first three months of 2022. Gone is the slimmest of hopes that Juventus could make the Serie A title race a four-team run to the finish line. Gone is the chance to sit in third place ahead of Inter Milan (despite their game in hand) heading into this final stretch where the schedule is somewhat forgiving until the last couple of fixtures.

Now, with that gone, things become simple — don’t screw up fourth place.

Who knows, maybe Inter does screw up again and the chance to jump into third becomes a reality again rather than what it is right now. The way they have played for much of 2022 does give you some kind of hope that more fumbling of results is in the cards. But getting in contention for a third-place finish won’t be possible unless Juventus can finish the season’s seven remaining games on a strong note. The first one, a Saturday night trip to Sardinia to face a Cagliari side that is just three points outside of the relegation zone, comes after Juve did some good things — scoring a goal or two against Inter not being one of them — last weekend before ultimately seeing their 16-game Serie A unbeaten run come to an end.

Maybe it’s time for a new unbeaten run, I don’t know.

But what I do know is this: Juventus can’t afford to let the Inter loss linger because what now feels like a somewhat comfortable five-point lead over a suddenly resurgent Roma side can become anything but that if results don’t pick back up in a hurry.

Max Allegri emphasized two main points during his pre-match press conference: Juventus must be more efficient in front of goal (because duh), and Juventus must keep its focus knowing both what’s at stake now and just how little of the season is left. Those are two valid things to one in on, especially when you consider that there’s a parallel between the two. We know that Juve’s inability to finish has cost them in some of the biggest games this season, with the most recent example of that coming less than a week ago.

Basically, this the soft kind of landing that Juventus suddenly needs after a tough loss like last Sunday night was. And, because it comes against a Cagliari team that is sitting in 17th place, hasn’t won since late February and is coming off a 5-1 loss to known Italian powerhouse Udinese. So, yeah, Juve’s next opponent is very much in a bad state on top of being in a relegation battle that will almost certainly go down to the last weekend of the 2021-22 season.

Which means, as you might have guessed, this is not the time to be dropping points.

Or, as Allegri put it: “We don’t want to go from being outsiders for the league title to having only a two-point advantage for the Champions League next season.”

For Juventus, there’s 21 points still out for the taking. If Allegri’s squad goes out and gets the vast majority of those, then a fourth-place finish will be the bare minimum of what happens come season’s end.

TEAM NEWS

The same long-term injuries are the same as they’ve been for weeks now: Federico Chiesa, Weston McKennie and Kaio Jorge.

However, there is this: After McKennie mentioned that he is aiming for a late-April or early-May return to the field, Max Allegri essentially confirmed that during his pre-match press conference Friday. “It would be useful to have Weston McKennie back available before the end of the season,” said Allegri. “We’ll see how his recovery goes in a month or so.”

Manuel Locatelli is also out injured after picking up a knee injury in the Derby d’Italia. He is expected to be out about a month.

Alvaro Morata and Mattia De Sciglio are both suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

Allegri said Leonardo Bonucci “is feeling a lot better,” but he has yet to decide if the Italian veteran defender will be in the starting lineup or start on the bench against Cagliari.

With another lack of options in the center of the midfield, Fabio Miretti has been called up from the Under-23 team to provide some depth.

JUVENTUS PLAYER TO WATCH

No Locatelli for the next month means that the man how spins out of tackles with the ball at his feet with oh-so-tiny circles is set to be the creative source in Juve’s midfield.

What? You were expecting somebody else?

For much of the week, the predicted lineups from members of the Italian were thinking the 4-2-3-1 was going to stay and that would be that, with Denis Zakaria and Adrien Rabiot manning the double pivot. But there’s been a switch, with those same folks now thinking it will either be a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 used Saturday night.

The guy who’s come into those predicted lineups? Yep, it’s Arthur.

No matter if it’s a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 it will be a Talls & Smalls midfield. You can thank all three central players and there height (or lack of it in Arthur’s case) for that visual gag.

But Arthur’s importance over the next month is very real. Whether it’s spectacular or not remains to be seen, but the diminutive Brazilian player is now going to be expected to be the provider and main creative source in a midfield that, with Zakaria now back in the fold after being out injured, actually has some logical function to it. Juve now has the destroyer it’s been missing for weeks with Zakaria back, Rabiot can fill the box-to-box role quite well if he plays anything like he did against Inter last weekend and that leaves Arthur to do what a regista-y player is supposed to do.

That’s not always gone well. He certainly hasn’t come close to impressing all that much in his two seasons with Juventus. And that might mean his fate is already sealed when it comes to what happens this summer.

For the immediate future, though, Juve need Arthur to be more good than bad because their best seller isn’t going to be back in the fold until the beginning of May.

03:30 Jury finds 2 men not guilty in Whitmer kidnap case; unable to reach verdicts on 2 oth
Jurors acquitted two men Friday accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and deadlocked on charges against the two alleged ringleaders, delivering a staggering blow to the government in one of the largest domestic terrorism cases in recent U.S. history.

Chief U.S. District Robert Jonker declared a mistrial on kidnapping conspiracy charges against accused ringleaders Adam Fox, 38, of Potterville, and Barry Croft, 46, of Delaware. Accused plotters Daniel Harris, 24, of Lake Orion, and Brandon Caserta, 34, of Canton Township, were being freed Friday afternoon after nearly two years behind bars.

"Best birthday gift ever," Caserta told supporters as relatives yelled "Happy Birthday" inside the federal courtroom in downtown Grand Rapids.

The trial lasted 20 days, including 13 days of testimony and approximately 38 hours of jury deliberations spanning five days. Jurors — six men, six women, all white — heard hours of closing arguments and instructions last week after testimony and a multimedia case from the government.

The mixed verdict provided a biting end to a case dogged by controversy, scandal and the intense focus of a nation grappling with the rise of violent extremism amid the 2020 presidential election and a global pandemic.

Explainer: Charges in Michigan Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot case

Defense lawyers spent months raising questions about FBI agent conduct and claiming that a team of investigators and informants orchestrated the conspiracy and entrapped the four men, a ragtag band of social outcasts who harbored antigovernment views and anger over restrictions imposed by Whitmer.

"I think the trial here has demonstrated that there’s some serious shortcomings in the case,” Fox's defense lawyer, Christopher Gibbons, told reporters. “Obviously with acquittals occurring with Mr. Caserta and Mr. Harris, that says a lot about what is going on in the case.”

Andrew Birge, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan, vowed to retry the accused ringleaders, Fox and Croft.

“We thought the jury would convict beyond reasonable doubt based on the evidence we put forward,” he told reporters outside the courthouse. “We believe in the jury system. We have two defendants awaiting trial.”

The verdicts came almost exactly 10 years after the acquittals of five members of the Hutaree militia following a trial in Detroit.

Hutaree members were accused of talking about killing law enforcement officers and using weapons of mass destruction to attack the funeral procession. They were acquitted of seditious conspiracy following the 2012 trial, marking one of the landmark losses for federal prosecutors in Michigan in recent history.

Extremism experts said Friday it appeared that defense lawyers effectively sowed enough doubt among jurors after arguing throughout the trial that FBI agents and a key informant, Dan Chappel, manipulated and entrapped the four defendants and plied them with marijuana.

“The ultimate question will be did the jury come to the conclusion that the mess of informants and the amount of (stuff) the defense threw up was enough to muddy the waters,” said Jon Lewis, a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University.

The four men in the Whitmer kidnapping case faced kidnapping conspiracy charges, a felony punishable by up to life in prison. Three faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Whitmer's chief of staff, JoAnne Huls, on Friday responded to the verdicts, saying: “Today, Michiganders and Americans — especially our children — are living through the normalization of political violence. The plot to kidnap and kill a governor may seem like an anomaly. But we must be honest about what it really is: the result of violent, divisive rhetoric that is all too common across our country. There must be accountability and consequences for those who commit heinous crimes. Without accountability, extremists will be emboldened."

Earlier Friday, jurors indicated they had reached a verdict on some counts in the case but were locked on others. Jonker announced the development just before 11 a.m. and encouraged the jurors to keep deliberating in hopes of reaching a unanimous verdict.

"It is not unusual to come back somewhere along the line of deliberations and say 'we tried, but couldn’t get there,'" the judge said. "At least not on everything."

Around 2 p.m., the jury reemerged before Jonker to indicate they remained at an impasse. Jonker instructed them to return to the jury room to confirm the impasse and fill out forms to indicate what charges they were in agreement on if so. They returned minutes later to reveal their verdicts.

On Friday, Jonker likened the situation to the game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire,” and the famous catchphrase “Is that your final answer?”

“Before that’s the final answer, I would like you to go back and make another effort to see if you can come to an agreement on issues you are stuck on as a group,” the judge told jurors.

The trial coincided with jurors in federal court in Washington, D.C., hearing the first cases involving people charged in the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Together, the trials provide the first tests of federal laws being used to punish extremist behavior that erupted nationally in 2020 and 2021 around the presidential election and pandemic.

When jurors entered the courtroom before 11 a.m. Friday, they did so without looking at the four defendants across from them. Some jurors sighed after hearing they would be sent back for more deliberations.

One young male juror leaned his head back, rotated his chair from side to side while looking up at the ceiling. Other jurors craned their necks or cleaned their glasses as the judge spoke.

Facing the jury, the four defendants were dressed in fresh suits and button-up shirts.

Harris had a book he's had for three days, "Make Your Bed" by William McRaven. The blue softcover book is a summary of a commencement speech made by Admiral McRaven for the graduating class of the University of Texas in Austin, sharing 10 lessons he learned from Navy SEAL training. In a synopsis, the book covers how to deal with overcoming the trials of SEAL training and, in general, the challenges of life.

The defendants were arrested in early October 2020 and accused of hatching the plot due to distrust of the government and anger over restrictions imposed during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two others, Ty Garbin and Kaleb Franks, earlier pleaded guilty and testified during the trial, telling jurors the plot originated with the group and that they were not entrapped by FBI agents and informants. Eight others are awaiting trial in state courts on domestic terrorism charges.

During the trial, jurors saw secret recordings of the bombs being built in Wisconsin, defendants firing weapons in rural Michigan, going on a night surveillance run past the governor's cottage and griping about tyrannical government officials during a hotel meeting in Ohio.

Jurors also listened to recordings and read texts that suggested ways to assassinate Whitmer — everything from posing as a pizza-delivering assassin to hog-tying the governor and leaving her on a boat in the middle of Lake Michigan.

The acquittals and mistrial came one year after the first sign of trouble in the case. In March 2021, federal prosecutors dumped one of their lead informants, Wisconsin felon Stephen Robeson, and indicted him on a federal gun crime.

Prosecutors accused him of working as a double agent, offering to finance attacks and use a drone to commit domestic terrorism.

The Robeson scandal would be followed by more warning signs. FBI Agent Richard Trask served as the FBI's public face in the Whitmer case, testifying in federal court about the investigation, until he was arrested in July, accused of beating his wife after a swingers party, fired and convicted of assault.

Defense lawyers raised more questions about two other FBI case agents — including one accused of trying to profit off the case by creating a cybersecurity firm — while insisting government informants, especially Chappel, invented the conspiracy and entrapped the defendants.

“To me, this was a signal. A rogue FBI agent trying to line his own pockets with his own cybersecurity company and then pushing the conspiracy that just never was,” Caserta lawyer Michael Hills told reporters. “Never was, never was going to be. Our governor was never in any danger.

“I think the jury, even though they didn’t get all of it,” Hills added, “they smelled enough of it.”

09:38 Rayfield Wright, Hall of Famer and Dallas Cowboys legend
Rayfield Wright, the Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive tackle nicknamed "Big Cat" who went to five Super Bowls in his 13 NFL seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, died Thursday. He was 76.

Wright's family confirmed his death Thursday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which said Wright had been hospitalized for several days following a severe seizure. The Cowboys also confirmed the death.

"Rayfield Wright was the epitome of what it takes to be a Hall of Famer," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. "His grit, his agility, his passion, his charisma and his love for football, the community and his family always shined through. The original 'Big Cat' helped shape the future of the Dallas Cowboys through his illustrious 13-year playing career. Rayfield was a champion on and off the field. He remained an important part of the Cowboys family long after his playing days ended, and he will be deeply missed. Our love and support go out to his wife, Di, and the entire Wright family."

A big player for his era at 6-foot-6 and over 250 pounds, Wright had already been a backup tight end for a couple of seasons when coach Tom Landry asked him about playing tackle. A surprised Wright said he had never played tackle in his life, but Landry told him he would make a good one.

Wright first started at tackle in a 1969 game lined up against Deacon Jones, the most dominant pass-rusher of that era. Wright held his own and settled in as the full-time starter at right tackle in 1970, when Dallas made its first Super Bowl. The Cowboys then won their first Super Bowl title in 1971, the first of six consecutive seasons Wright was a Pro Bowler. He was a three-time All-Pro.

"He was absolutely the best," Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach said before Wright's hall induction in 2006. "Rayfield was a big, strong guy that was able to transfer his size and strength from tight end to tackle. He also had such quick feet that he was able to deal with some of the faster defensive ends and even the linebacker blitzes. If he got beat, I don't remember it."

His "Big Cat" nickname was because of being so nimble for his size.

Dallas won another Super Bowl in 1977, but Wright played only two games that season because of knee surgery. He had played in 95 of the team's 98 regular-season games, starting 94 of them, the previous seven seasons.

After Wright started only 16 of his 31 games in 1978 and 1979, he was released by the Cowboys the following spring. He signed with NFC East rival Philadelphia, but officially retired because of lingering injuries early in training camp without playing a game for the Eagles.

Wright was diagnosed with early stage dementia in 2012, but had long been plagued by seizures since his retirement. He believed they were from the effects of continued blows to the head while playing football. He had long hidden dealing with headaches, dizziness and, at times, unexplained irritability and forgetfulness.

In a 2014 interview with The New York Times, Wright said he incurred so many concussions during his NFL career that he couldn't even count them.

When finally inducted into the Hall of Fame more than a quarter century after his last game, Wright was presented in Canton, Ohio, by longtime Fort Valley State football coach Stan Lomax.

Wright didn't even make his high school football team for three years in Griffin, Georgia, before he went to Fort Valley State in his home state to play basketball. The following summer, Lomax made him quit his summer job at a mill to get ready to join the football team.

Lomax tried Wright at free safety, then used him as a punter, defensive end and tight end. The coach also became a father figure to Wright, who was picked by the Cowboys in the seventh round of the 1967 NFL draft.

Wright still preferred basketball, though he turned down an offer after his junior season to sign with the NBA's Cincinnati Royals, the franchise that is now the Sacramento Kings, so that he could finish school.

His sights were still set on the NBA when Cowboys player personnel director Gil Brandt called and said the team was interested in drafting him.

"I realized that potential, playing for the Cowboys, was a God-given opportunity, and I couldn't ignore it. I decided to attend the Cowboys' training camp which was in July. The Royals camp didn't start till August," Wright said in his Hall of Fame speech. "I kind of figured that if I didn't make the Cowboys team, I could go right to the NBA."

Wright said Brandt was "signing everybody that could walk" and that he was among 137 rookies in the Cowboys' training camp in 1967. He was one of five that made the team.

Wright was a backup tackle the first two months of the 1969 season, then thrust into the starting job when Ralph Neely got hurt. His first start came when Dallas, then 8-1, played at the 9-0 Los Angeles Rams with their Fearsome Foursome defense.

"We go up to the line of scrimmage and I'm looking at Deacon Jones square in his eyes, his eyes seem to be red as fire, he's kicking his back leg like a bull," Wright later recalled. "I'm saying to myself, 'My God, what have I got myself into?'"

Before the ball was snapped, Jones bellowed, "Boy, does your Mama know you out here?" Wright was so stunned that Jones ran over him.

"I rolled over, looked over at our sideline thinking that coach Landry was going to take me out of the game," Wright said. "By that time, Deacon Jones reached his big arms down and said, 'Hey, rookie, welcome to the NFL.' ... I said, 'Well, Mr. Jones, you don't know my Mama, so don't talk about her. You want to play the game this way, we'll play it.'"

The Rams won 24-23, but Wright got a game ball for the job he wound up doing against Jones. Their duels over the years went a long way toward building Wright's reputation.

Dallas never had a losing record in Wright's 13 seasons, a span that included eight NFC Championship Games and those five Super Bowl appearances. He was part of the NFL's all-decade team for the 1970s.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers have spent the offseason seeking a replacement for starting quarterback Sam Darnold, but he isn't concerned.

"It's truly whatever happens happens, because at the end of the day it's out of my control, and I know that," Darnold, 24, said on the "Bussin' with the Boys" podcast created by Tennessee Titans tackle Taylor Lewan and free-agent linebacker Will Compton. "I have enough security in myself where I can say, 'I know I'm a good quarterback. I know I can be a good quarterback in this league. I've proved it.'

"And I know there's a team, if something happens, that would want me."

Darnold, the third pick of the 2018 draft, admitted what the Panthers have done has been "a little shot to the ego," but said he is prepared for whatever happens.

Carolina general manager Scott Fitterer recently began the offseason by saying the starting job was "open." The team then pursued Deshaun Watson to the point it was willing to give up three first-round picks, at least one player and other draft picks for a quarterback facing 22 civil suits involving sexual misconduct.

The Cleveland Browns ultimately landed Watson in exchange for three first-round picks (2022, '23, '24), one third-round pick (2023) and two fourth-round picks (2022, 2024). Watson also got a record five-year, $230 million deal guaranteed.

The Panthers, who own the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft, spent the next week at the pro days of quarterbacks Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh, Malik Willis of Liberty and Matt Corral of Mississippi.

Fitterer followed those visits by saying Darnold was "in the lead for the job," but didn't rule out using the sixth pick on one of them.

"At the end of the day somebody has got to answer for it," Darnold said of whatever decision is made at quarterback. "Whoever it is. The GM. The coach. If something happens like that, we'll see what they have to say, and that's about it."

The Panthers acquired Darnold last April in a trade with the New York Jets, giving up a sixth-rounder in 2021 and a second- and fourth-rounder in 2022.

Darnold, who went 13-25 in three years with the Jets, won his first three starts for the Panthers. He finished 4-7, missing six games while recovering from a shoulder injury, and again ranked statistically as one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

While he was out, the Panthers brought back 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton, the top pick of the 2011 draft who was released in 2020 shortly after coach Matt Rhule was hired.

Newton went 0-5 as the starter and remains a free agent, although Fitterer and Rhule haven't ruled out bringing him back.

Darnold said he learned a lot from Newton and welcomed him as a teammate.

"He was a great dude," Darnold said. "A great guy in the quarterback room. A great guy to have around in general because his energy is unmatched. And then I come back and play and he's a great guy.

"I really have nothing bad to say about Cam."

Darnold has been careful the past four years not to say anything bad about the Jets or their fans who booed him. He said his experience in New York helped prepare him to handle the criticism he is getting now.

But he admitted some of the criticism bothered him.

"The part that pisses me is off is when people judge my game, like how I'm playing," he said. "Then I'm like, 'Go strap it up.' I'm [like], 'You're a fan and I respect you as a fan. You can talk all the s--- you want, I'm not going to do anything at the end of the day, but take it easy.'

"What if I was like, 'The house you just worked on, piece of s---. You're so bad at tiling. You should really go get another job. Really think about your profession.' Sometimes you want to say stuff like that, but you can't."

Darnold said he told Jets management it was "making a mistake" when the team made the trade and then went on to select quarterback Zach Wilson with the second pick of the 2021 draft.

"At the end of the day, it's not my call," he said. "If they don't think I'm the guy, it is what it is."

Now Darnold's potentially in that position again at Carolina.

"I'm just trying to learn Coach McAdoo's system," he said of new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. "That's where it's at."

12:55 Golf desperately needs Masters spectacle only Tiger Woods can create
Even during dress rehearsals, Tiger Woods can move the earth at Augusta National like nobody else. He spent his Masters practice time wowing his fellow pros with his ability to hit the long ball and to fire darts at the flags, and reminding everyone just how much the game still desperately needs him.

Thousands upon thousands of fans followed his every move Monday and Wednesday, with the heavy Tuesday rains interrupting the love fest, and it all made for a remarkable and frightful scene at the same time.

Remarkable, of course, because Woods could have been killed when he wrecked his SUV south of Los Angeles not even 14 months ago, and could have lost his right leg to amputation because of the grotesque injuries it sustained.

Frightful because the practice-round visuals proved again just how much golf still desperately needs a scarred and banged-up 46-year-old who is moving around this arena with an old man’s limp.

When Woods first came along as a college kid in the mid-1990s, golf was a fringe, country club sport known best for its shameful history of exclusion. Woods changed everything, obliterating the field with unprecedented power and precision. Packing Arnold Palmer’s muscles and mass appeal, and Jack Nicklaus’s determination and skill, Tiger became the first golfer who stood as the world’s most recognizable athlete.

The game rode that wave and held on for dear life through the scandal, the surgeries, the roadside police video, more surgeries, and even the crash. Golf would never become as popular as football, baseball, and basketball in this country, but Tiger Woods made it feel, at times, as big as the biggest NFL Sunday. There was real hope that a new generation of athletes — inspired by Woods — would abandon the fields and diamonds and courts in favor of the fairways and greens to carry golf to greater heights.

Even though the Rory McElroys, Brooks Koepkas and Dustin Johnsons have brought more athleticism to the game, that revolution hasn’t happened. Kobe Bryant and then LeBron James were there to carry the NBA after Michael Jordan took his ball and went home. Golf has its share of promising young players, but I don’t see any Kobes or LeBrons.

I don’t see any Tigers either, other than the one who believes he can win this tournament on one leg.

Once upon a time, I didn’t think any superstar golfer could be bigger than the Masters itself. Augusta National is Wrigley Field meets Fenway Park, the one major championship venue that never changes and never disappoints. The feel of the sun and the sight of the greenest grass and whitest sand can have a profound restorative impact on a northeasterner worn down by another long winter.

But Woods proved me dead wrong. I’ve covered the Masters with and without him in the field, and the difference in the experience is the difference between a dusty, ragtag par-3 at your local muni and the 12th hole at Amen Corner.

While practicing on the seventh hole Monday, Jon Rahm saw the gallery tracking the Woods, Fred Couples and Justin Thomas group walking down the second hole and said, “I’ve never seen a mass this big, even on a Sunday in contention.” Thomas, one of the best players on the planet, walked alongside that gallery for nine holes and said, “I had a couple of buddies send me some pictures [Monday] night, and that’s probably more people than have ever watched me play a round at Augusta National, and they weren’t there to watch me.”

They were there to watch Tiger because even at this age, and even in this condition, he transcends everything about the game he plays. In other words, no sport has ever needed an athlete more than golf needed and needs Tiger Woods.

Jordan elevated pro basketball globally, but Magic Johnson and Larry Bird had already saved the NBA from late-night, tape-delayed irrelevance in the pre-MJ age long before Kobe and LeBron dominated in the post-MJ, social media age. Tom Brady helped notarize the NFL as must-see TV, but Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes came in behind him as improvisational geniuses at pro football’s most visible position.

Nick Faldo and Greg Norman preceded Woods, and McIlroy, DJ and Jordan Spieth arrived on the back nine of his prime. Legitimate stars, without question, but as champions and public figures not within the longest par-five of Tiger.

“On Monday, I’ve never seen anything like it,” Couples said Wednesday. “I’ve been in the last group here, won here. … I have pictures [from Monday] that I’ll probably have made up. They’re not about me. It’s just the gallery people have sent me … [from] No. 8, No. 7 way back in the corner, and there’s [fans] 10 deep.

“So they wanted to see the big guy, and they saw him and they saw good golf. … It was unbelievable.”

And frightening at the same time. So at 10:34 Thursday morning, when the 15-time major champ and 82-time Tour winner tees off with Louis Oosthuizen and Joaquin Niemann, the entire golf world will stop and watch and roar.

This sport will hold onto Tiger Woods for as long as it possibly can, because there isn’t anyone else remotely like him approaching from the rear.

00:39 Who are the hosts for the Oscars 2022?
Oscars 2022: New hosts, categories and controversies

The Oscars will take place on March 27; this year’s ceremony will be hosted by three women for the first time.

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, is a ceremony where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) hands out awards for creative and technical excellence in the film industry.

The AMPAS held their first Academy Awards in 1929. Oscars 2022 is the 94th Academy Awards.

What is an Oscar award and who is nominated for the Oscars 2022?

The Academy Award of Merit, nicknamed the Oscar award, is a golden statuette given to reward high achievement in a specific category, including, acting, directing, editing, score, and costume design, among others.

The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards are here.

Netflix’s The Power of the Dog leads the way with 12 nominations, including nominations for best picture, best director and several acting awards.

When and where are the Oscars 2022 held?

The Oscars will be held on March 27, 2022, at 17:00 PST (00:00 GMT).

The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre, located in Los Angeles, United States.

Who are the hosts for the Oscars 2022?

The presenters for this year’s ceremony are actresses Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes. While Hall is known for her ability to perform comic roles in movies, Schumer and Sykes are stand-up comedians in addition to being actresses. This is the first time in the history of Oscars that three women are hosting the show.

The Oscars has not had a host since Jimmy Kimmel in 2018.

The 2021 ceremony had an all-time low viewership with fewer than 10 million people tuning in to watch the awards ceremony. This year, the Academy is aiming to regain its lost viewership and increase its ratings.

Are there any controversies about the Oscars this year?

In another effort to keep viewers watching longer, the Academy decided to shorten the live segment by cutting eight categories out of this year’s televised programme, sparking controversy. The Academy tried to cut four categories out of the 2019 Oscars but had to reverse its decision after a severe backlash.

The eight categories, namely documentary short subject, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short film, live-action short film, and sound, are instead going to be held an hour earlier and the winner’s acceptance speeches will be edited into the live broadcast later.

Another event that caused public backlash was the fact that Rachel Zegler, the co-lead of West Side Story, was not invited to the ceremony – even though the film she worked on was nominated seven times.

Later, the Academy reversed its decision and Zegler received an invitation to present at the Oscars.

“I’m so excited to open that shiny envelope,” the actress said on Twitter. “I could not be more grateful to everyone who helped make this possible. seriously. Now, what to wear …”

23:02 Mechanism Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury In Female Soccer Players
Mechanism Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury In Female Soccer Players

The present study found that ACL injury often occurs as non-contact injury during pressing at the time of defense, regardless of the playing area, in female soccer players.

In the present study, the female soccer players had a higher risk of sustaining non-contact ACL injuries than contact injuries, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies (3-5). Additionally, non-contact ACL injuries occurred more often during pressing (76%) than during other playing movements (49%), such as dribbling, trapping, and kicking. This is consistent with the finding of a previous study that reported a high incidence of ACL injury during pressing in professional male soccer players (11). In addition, this study reported that the maneuver performed in the injured players was side cutting on one leg while extending one leg towards the ball during pressing. Excessive hip internal rotation and knee internal rotation will be present during this cutting maneuver, and these have been identified as risk factors for non-contact ACL injury (15). Moreover, the greater knee abduction (valgus) angle in female athletes than in male athletes is associated with a higher risk of non-contact ACL injury in female athletes (16, 17). We found that ACL injuries occurred more frequently during defensive actions than during attacking actions. ACL injuries during defense occurred in the defensive one-third of the field. However ACL injuries during pressing occurred throughout the playing area. A previous study reported that most incidents during defense occurred in the defensive one-third of the field, whereas most incidents during offense occurred in the attacking one-third of the field (14). Whether pressing has been conducted in any area depends on the tactics of the team, and it should be confirmed that the pressing maneuver during defensive actions is associated with a high risk of sustaining non-contact ACL injuries in female soccer players.

In the present study, ACL injury was the most common at the age of 18 years. In addition, the incidence of ACL injury increased up to the age of 18 years and then reduced from the age of 20 years. A previous study reported that the incidence of ACL injury in female subjects was the highest at years of age (18), which is consistent with our finding. Another study reported that knee movement increases with a rapid increase in body height and weight (19), which is caused by exponential growth during puberty. Dynamic alignment in the jump task during puberty has been reported to change with physical growth (20). These changes have been shown to be associated with various factors, such as anatomical, environmental, hormonal, neuromuscular, and biomechanical factors (21). Therefore, training focused on correcting dynamic alignment is essential in young female soccer players, especially those aged

The incidence of ACL injury was very high on artificial turf. A previous study reported a high rate of ACL injury on synthetic playing surfaces in football, but did not find an increase in the risk of ACL injury on synthetic playing surfaces in soccer (22). In Japan, young female soccer players rarely play on natural grass. Therefore, the number of games played might have influenced the result, and it cannot be concluded that artificial turf increases the risk of serious ACL injury. In this study, the incidence of ACL injury was high in players who used round spikes. A previous study reported that foot mechanics and possibly the foot-shoe interaction were not related to the landing mechanics in female soccer players (23). In order to determine whether the use of round spikes can significantly increase the risk of ACL injury, it would be required to ascertain the type of spikes used by players of all the teams.

The present study found that ACL injury in female players occurred more often during a game than during practice, and this might be because a player’s momentum and intensity are higher during a game than during practice. In addition, there is a high possibility of ACL injury during a game, as the player might have difficulty controlling posture in a confrontation with an opponent.

In the future, movements, such as cutting on one leg while extending one leg to the ball during pressing with a high strength instantaneous reaction, should be practiced to avoid injury during a competition in addition to basic injury prevention methods, which have been adopted until now.

The present study had some limitations. First, this was a retrospective study. Second, the study relied on player recall of the injury for information. In the future, it is necessary to determine the circumstances during ACL injury using videotapes.

5.1. Conclusions

ACL injury might often occur as non-contact injury during pressing at the time of defense, regardless of the playing area, in female soccer players. The present findings will aid in the identification of the causes of anterior cruciate ligament injury in female soccer players and will help in the creation of competition-specific rehabilitation and prevention methods.

01:32 Gaming And Banning On Ban On Online Games
Online gaming might be addictive, but a ban will militate against individual freedom

Online gaming might be addictive, but a ban will militate against individual freedom

Yet another legislative attempt to prohibit online gaming has failed under judicial scrutiny. The amendments brought to existing regulations on betting and gambling in Karnataka have been struck down by the State’s High Court. Last year, the Madras High Court invalidated similar amendments that targeted online rummy and poker. What is common to both cases is that the legislature assumed a paternalistic role, arguably with the laudable aim of protecting the people, especially the youth, from the temptations of online gambling. However, the resulting provisions failed to make a distinction between games of skill and games of chance, and sought to bring under the proscription all games played online, regardless of the extent to which skill was required. Further, the Karnataka High Court has rejected a key submission that it could be upheld as a ‘public order’ law. It referred to “the menace of cyber games” of epic proportions, and the registration of about 28,000 cases by the police in the State in the last three years. The government did have a point when it said many have taken their own lives and families ruined as a result of gaming addiction and indebtedness. However, as the court has pointed out, if the objective was to curb the menace of gambling, the government should prohibit activities that amount to gambling as such, and not the games of skill. While enacting the extreme measure, it did not consider the feasibility of regulating wagering on games of skill.

While the idea of betting and gambling conjures up the image of a ‘bucket shop’ associated with dingy gaming-houses frequented by hustlers, there is an element of ‘information, expression and entertainment’ that has constitutional protection. And gaming platforms are also a legitimate business that enjoy the freedom of trade when used for online versions of games of skill. The court has drawn attention to the fact that what such bans do is to create “a wholly new category of medium-based regulation, when chance of medium per se does not alter the true nature and content of the games”. In other words, what is targeted is not the gambling part but the ‘online’ part. Also, the amendments contradicted a general exemption in the original law to ‘games of skill’ by making all online gaming punishable even if they involved skill. It is clear that an absolute embargo on games of skill involving money or stakes could not have been upheld by the court, as the line between individual freedom, both to carry on the business and to participate in it as a consumer, and state action could not have been obliterated. All legislation that assumes that sections of society require the hand of the state to guide and support them have some populist appeal. And there is an addictive element to online gaming, but that does not mean there is no individual freedom and choice at all.

Against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, these blockchains have risen to prominence, with highlights including Tesla billionaire Elon Musk spruiking the coins, El Salvador adopting bitcoin as legal tender, Facebook creating an entire metaverse with crypto as the only currency and digital assets entering global stock markets in the form of exchange traded funds (ETFs).

But at the same time, China banned all cryptocurrency, the coins have suffered from huge drops in price, sometimes over the course of just an hour, and government regulations are looming across the world to control the rapidly growing market, including in Australia with Treasurer Josh Frydenberg flagging changes.

News.com.au has put together a list of the coins that experts think could do well into the new year, and the ones that will drag down your finances.

How the coins ended up ranked by the end of the year. What can we expect for cryptocurrency in 2022?

Greg Rubin, head of trading at Aussie firm Global Prime, said that early next year would be volatile for crypto investors with some of the coins more than doubling in value. Then there would be a big drop and prices would remain relatively stable but low, he predicted.

“Looking at the scale of probabilities, it seems the most likely end to the bull run that kicked off in 2020 will be next year,” he told news.com.au.

He thinks it could be as soon as the first quarter of 2022.

“What we usually see is a blow off top and then the markets tend to drop quite quickly, and then the markets tend to go sideways for a number of months or years,” Mr Rubin warned.

Like the 2017 crypto crash, he predicts that most of the coins won’t survive and will never reach the same levels again once the price drops drastically.

“A lot of the altcoins are going to go crazy before the end is nigh,” he added.

What will set up a cryptocurrency token for success heading into 2022?

Tommy Honan, head of corporate partnerships at Aussie crypto exchange platform Swyftx, had some tips about what to look out for before piling your cash into the next big thing.

He explained that cryptocurrency in 2021 was characterised by meme coins soaring after major hype, a huge growth of play-to-earn gaming which rewards participants with cryptocurrency and/or non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and Facebook’s metaverse.

“If the meme coins and gaming and NFTs were the trend of 2021, I think [for] the start of 2022, the top performers are going to be ones that incorporate all of that,” he told news.com.au.

On top of that, he expects the decentralised finance aspects of coins to regain popularity with the world heading into high inflationary environments, which cryptocurrency is largely immune to.

He also pointed to some of the most successful coins this year, such as gala which is up by more than 41,000 per cent, ceek is up by 27,000 per cent, axiom with a 16,000 percentage increase and solana is at around 15,000 per cent more than it started out in 2021.

“There are some of your big performers and trends for 2021 [and] some of the trends we’ll see continuing into 2022,” he added.

“The message doesn’t change, the long term view overall [is] definitely bullish.”

What about regulations being introduced for cryptocurrency in 2022?

Every time there is mention of greater regulations and restrictions for cryptocurrencies, the market responds, usually by dropping in price.

But Mr Honan said it’s nothing to be afraid of.

“We know that there is a lot of money waiting in the sidelines for the correct regulations,” he said.

“The overall sentiment is that they’re positive. A lot of it comes from a consumer protection background, gives more people the confidence to get involved.”

Earlier this month, Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said he wanted to protect investors who traded cryptocurrency on exchanges, in case the exchanges collapsed, as has happened twice before.

Bitcoin had a pretty good year and experts are still bullish for 2022. Bitcoin

Both Mr Rubin and Mr Honan think bitcoin is slated for greatness, with expectations it will hit six figures per coin next year.

However, what level of six figures varied wildly between both experts.

Mr Honan thinks bitcoin could easily be within US$150,000 territory at its peak next year.

Mr Rubin had a more conservative estimate, suggesting the blockchain would hit anywhere from US$114,000 (A$158,000) to US$130,000 (A$181,000) before plummeting back to the US$10,000-US$20,000 (A$13,000-A$27,000) mark, a drop of around 70 per cent, where it would remain.

“When the volatility dies down, it will meander on low volume for years,” he explained, before it experienced its next bull run.

At the moment, the top-ranked cryptocurrency is worth US$48,000 (A$66,000), after hitting an all-time high in November of nearly US$69,000 (A$96,000).

Bitcoin started out trading at about $0.08 back in 2010. The coin’s return on investment is 36,134.65 per cent — which is how much you would have made back if you’d put money into it at the very beginning.

At the start of this year, BTC was going for US$19,000 (A$26,000), so it has risen by 157 per cent over the last 12 months after continually topping its previous all-time highs.

Ethereum

Eethereum, which is ranked second on the crypto scale, is expected to surpass its current prices and all-time high in the new year.

“In terms of ethereum, it’s pretty much the same trend, I can see ETH hitting and holding a five figure price,” Mr Honan said.

Meanwhile, Mr Rubin expected gains from anywhere between US$10,000 (A$13,000) to US$20,000 (A$27,000).

However, he then expected the coin to shed as much as 85 per cent of its value.

At time of writing, ETH was trading for just over US$4000 (A$5500), down from its November high of nearly US$4900 ($6800).

It started the year off at just US$560 (A$780) per coin, indicative of its whopping 607 per cent rise.

Ethereum also had a great year. Solana

Mr Honan said that both the attributes of solana as well as its bullish year of 2021 could indicate a positive future for the altcoin.

Ranked number five on the crypto leaderboard, solana emerged almost out of non-existence to overtake bigger players in the crypto space.

SOL started at US$1.50 (A$2) a year ago, before hitting a high of US$260 (A$360) last month.

Its current price is around US$180 (A$250) with a market capitalisation of $US54 billion (A$75 billion).

“Solana is seen as an ethereum competitor. It’s one that a lot of people are backing, it scales really well, it’s faster and cheaper than ethereum, they also made a play into the NFT space,” Mr Honan said.

Solana pushed its way into the top five this year. Sandbox

You might not have heard of it, and I wouldn’t blame you. Sandbox, or SAND, has seemingly risen up out of nowhere to claim the number 37 spot on the cryptocurrency ladder.

However, Mr Rubin thinks it’s headed for another jump because it has been involved in Facebook’s metaverse — which is where crypto is the main form of currency that can be traded while in the meta world.

Sandbox is one of the coins that has got an early foothold in the metaverse.

“The metaverse coins have been doing really well, there’s been a big drive, one of those is SAND,” Mr Rubin explain.

“Metaverse is the hot topic.”

Sandbox is worth US$5.14 right now. Its November 2021 all-time high was $8.44. It so far has a return on investment of a whopping 61,293 per cent.

Gala, ceek, axiom

These three cryptocurrencies are rising in popularity after being doled out as prize money in play-to-earn games.

Gala has increased in value by more than 41,000 per cent, ceek is up by 27,000 percentage wise, and axiom has jumped 16,000 per cent.

Of those, gala is selling for US$0.51 and is ranked number 29 while ceek is valued at US$0.5645 and coming in 153rd place on the crypto charts.

Axiom is further behind, ranked in 7549th position and can be bought at US$0.004401.

“The other really big trends that have emerged are play to earn gamin with axiom, gala, ceek, absolutely having some phenomenal progress there,” Mr Honan said.

“Definitely one of the standouts of 2021. People are playing games and earning a living, all they need is an internet connection and a computer.”

If this year’s trends are anything to go by, he said things are looking promising for these coins.

What not to invest in

There are a few big mistakes you should avoid when it comes to the crypto world, according to experts.

Shiba inu

Although shiba inu was the “standout” coin of this year, soaring by more than 50,000 per cent of its original price when it began 2021, experts don’t expect its success to be repeated.

Ranked number 13 on the cryptocurrency market, shiba inu is currently trading for US$0. , down significantly from its all-time high of US$0.000086. However, it’s still up significantly compared to how it started the year.

Mr Rubin said crypto enthusiasts are on the hunt for the next big coin like SHIB but they’re missing one important point.

“People are looking for the next shiba but it’s actually something you should stay away from,” he explained.

“They only hear about it [its gains] afterwards, unfortunately by then the move has already happened, unlikely to be replicated.”

On top of that, he says coins that experience “overexcitement” are not a good long-term investment.

“Meme coins are hype coins, have little to zero value behind them,” the investor said.

“As they start to go higher or higher, it’s just not even feasible on a scale, it becomes very dangerous, every time it goes higher, you keep expecting more, ultimately you do end up holding the bag.”

Shiba inu experience more than 50,000 per cent growth this year. XRP Ripple

Acknowledging it was a controversial opinion, Mr Rubin said Ripple (XRP) was not all it was cracked up to be.

Ripple XRP is currently ranked eighth on the cryptocurrency scale, after starting out in 2012.

It has a market cap of US$38 billion and each coin sells for US$0.8046 at the moment.

“It’s one of the few coins that has not made an all-time high [in 2o21],” Mr Rubin explained.

“It has the biggest cult following. For some reason, people who are invested in it think it’s the best coin, yet it’s a coin that is not performing in the bull run.”

He’s right; XRP’s all-time high of US$3.84 occurred in January 2018.

The coin is now worth just a fraction of that price, down by a whopping 78 per cent of its highest price.

“Why would you trade something that might go higher when there’s stuff around it that is going higher?” Mr Rubin asked.

“A missed opportunity for traders, it’s been a waste of time having your money in there.”

What’s more, the coin is embroiled in a court case with the US financial watchdog, the only cryptocurrency to be involved in such a controversy.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has claimed that every Ripple sale for the past seven years was an illegal securities trade because it was an unregistered entity.

The matter has gone to court and although it’s expected that Ripple will win, Mr Rubin expects the crypto crash to have already happened by then.

“By the time the court case comes out, the [crypto] market will be going out,” he warned.

Scam coins

It should go without saying, but do your research first before investing into a coin in case it turns out to be a scam — as millions learned the hard way earlier this year.

The squid coin, or SQUID, rose to prominence off the back of the Netflix TV series Squid Game in October.

The coin surged 90,0000 per cent within hours of listing, starting out at US$0.01235 and by midafternoon was worth $11.16 per token.

However, not all was as it seemed.

There was no option to sell the coins, only to buy them. It turned out the whole thing was a major scam, with the people behind SQUID making off with A$4.38 million.

09:41 Mechanism Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury In Female Soccer Players

18:15 Breast Enlargement Augmentation
Breast Enlargement, Augmentation

Why do people choose breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery?

People choose this operation for different reasons:

* To enhance the body contour

* To reconstruct the breast after previous breast surgery

* To improve breast size after having children

* To balance a difference in breast size.

What are the benefits of breast enlargement surgery?

Perhaps you have always wanted larger breasts. Or you may want to enhance the shape of your breasts following pregnancy or weight loss. Breast augmentation patients often report psychological benefits following the procedure including:

* Increased self esteem (self confidence)

* Enjoy wearing new/fitted clothing

* Feeling more feminine

* Body balance, feeling breast are more in proportion with your body.

What kind of breast implant should I choose?

* Based on your own needs our Nuffield Health consultant may also discuss and advise you on what implant might be best to use

* All implants are made of an outer layer (shell) of silicone

* They can be filled with silicone, salt water (saline) or both

* The silicone used to fill the implant can be in the form of a liquid or gel (cohesive silicone)

* Liquid silicone and saline implants give a softer and more natural feel

* Cohesive silicone implants give a firmer feel and can come in more shapes

* Liquid implants with a simple round shape often give as good results as shaped cohesive-gel implants

* The Medicines and Healthcare products regulatory Agency (MHRA) is responsible for ensuring the safety of implantable medical devices, including breast implants.

Is silicone safe?

Many studies have been carried out to find if silicone breast implants are safe. There is no evidence to suggest that women who have silicone breast implants are at a higher risk of getting diseases such as cancer and arthritis.

What happens during breast augmentation?

Your operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and usually takes about an hour and a half. There are several options for surgical incisions:

* Inframammary (the crease under the breast)

* Transaxillary (the armpit)

* Periareolar (the area around the nipple)

The type of incision (cut) used is based on the type of implant, the degree of augmentation (enlargement), your particular anatomy and patient/surgeon preference. Be sure and discuss incision options with your surgeon.

Your surgeon will usually place the implant in a pocket directly behind your breast as this gives the most natural result. However, if you do not have enough breast skin and tissue to cover the implant, your surgeon may recommend placing the implant behind the pectoral muscle. Be sure to discuss the implications of placement of your implant with your surgeon.

Going home after breast augmentation surgery

* You should be able to go home the same day or the day after your breast surgery

* You might be required to wear a special supportive bra for several weeks to help your breasts settle after the procedure

* Everyone recovers at their own pace. However most women return to normal activities within two to three weeks

* Depending on your type of job you should be able to return to work after the first week

* You should be able to do a limited amount of activity, such as lifting young children, after about two weeks

* It usually takes a few weeks for your breasts to look and feel more natural

* The results of a breast augmentation usually last for a long time. The length of time a breast implant lasts will vary depending on an individual's personal factors.

The below chart is only a guide as to the stages of recovery after breast augmentation

Sleep upright in bed supported by pillows to help reduce swelling.

Wear your support bra as advised by your consultant.

Take things easy when you get home.

Gradually increase your activity but nothing too strenuous.

Any nondissolvable stitches will be removed during this time.

Driving may be commenced only when comfortable.

Bruising and swelling continue to go down.

You can think about returning to work a week or two after surgery

Gentle exercise can resume after four weeks but avoid strenuous exercise for a further two weeks.

Your implants will begin to descend into a more natural looking position.

Scars will begin to soften and fade.

Final result can be judged

08:38 Using Cryptocurrencies For International Payments Benefits Risks
Using Cryptocurrencies For International Payments: Benefits & Risks

International Payments, the Old-Fashioned Way

For centuries, international payments have depended on banks. Networks of correspondent banks enabled international businesses to transact with each other around the world. Until the mid-20th century, this process was very slow, since it depended on postal communications between banks and could fail if payment instructions didn't arrive or the correspondent bank lacked the funds to make the payment.

Technological improvements in the last half-century mean that international payments now take days rather than weeks to arrive. The SWIFT international messaging system has replaced faxes and postal communications, speeding up the transmission of payment instructions. And central bank real-time gross settlement (RTGS) systems such as Fedwire and CHAPS (in the U.K.), together with the Continuous Linked Settlement (CLS) system for FX settlement, have eliminated the risk that payments will fail to reach their destination due to lack of funds in intermediary banks.

However, there is still a trade-off between speed of settlement and price. Businesses can send USD payments intraday via Fedwire, but the fees are high. Meanwhile, using the cheaper ACH system means payments may not settle for several days. International payments in many other currencies remain slow and expensive.

Cryptocurrency Technology is Changing the Face of International Payments

Cryptocurrencies are sometimes described as the "Wild West" of the financial system, breaking new technological frontiers and threatening to disrupt existing financial service providers.3 Bypassing traditional bank intermediation, they can enable businesses to transfer funds anywhere in the world quickly and cheaply. Advanced cryptographic techniques protect funds from theft and hacking, and the underlying blockchain technology filters out fraudulent or duplicate transactions. Transaction fees are generally low compared to central bank RTGS fees.

The oldest and best-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin. Other popular cryptocurrencies include Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash and Monero. The international digital payments protocol Ripple has its own native cryptocurrency. Both Ethereum and Bitcoin have "clones" – new cryptocurrencies created by a technical change, known as a "hard fork." Ethereum's clone is Ethereum Classic, and Bitcoin's is Bitcoin Cash. All of these can be used for international payments, though Bitcoin is by far the most widely used.

Cryptocurrencies can be particularly useful for cross-currency payments. For example, suppose an American business wishes to pay a Japanese supplier. The American business's main income is in U.S. dollars (USD), but the Japanese supplier wants to be paid in Japanese yen (JPY). Conventionally, either the American business must exchange USD for JPY before making the payment, or the Japanese supplier must make the same exchange on receipt. As the payment can take several days to settle, the USD-JPY exchange rate can move while the payment is in transit, causing losses for one or the other party to the transaction.

Typically, businesses use forward contracts or other FX hedging products to protect against this risk. However, if both parties agree that the payment will be made in Bitcoin (BTC), BTC's fast settlement can significantly reduce the risk of adverse exchange rate movements. The American business exchanges USD for BTC and sends BTC to the Japanese business, which exchanges BTC for JPY. If the two businesses use Ripple rather than BTC, conversion into and out of cryptocurrency is automatic.

Alternatively, if cash flow allows, both businesses can run BTC accounts, converting to and from their respective currencies when the BTC exchange rate is in their favor. Businesses that send and receive payments in multiple currencies could find using BTC for settlement streamlines cash flow management.

Key Risks to Consider When Using Cryptocurrencies for International Payments

However, using cryptocurrencies for international payments is not risk-free. Firstly, there is the problem of exchangeability. Cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase will readily exchange Bitcoin and Ethereum for major currencies such as USD, Japanese yen and euros, but other cryptocurrencies may only be exchangeable for USD or Bitcoin. Clearly, if a British business whose main income is in pounds (GBP) wishes to pay an Australian supplier in Australian dollars (AUD), using a cryptocurrency that can only be exchanged for USD or Bitcoin creates additional FX risk.

Secondly, cryptocurrency exchange rates are extremely volatile. Businesses can risk significant losses if they run cash positions in cryptocurrencies for any length of time, though they may of course also profit from exchange rate gains. Opportunities for hedging against adverse exchange rate movements are currently limited: some cryptocurrency futures and options are traded on specialist exchanges, but they can be expensive and volatile. There are also some over-the-counter derivative products, but these can be highly speculative: one such product, the "contract for difference", was recently the subject of a regulatory warning from the U.K.'s Financial Conduct Authority.5

However, there are signs that a deeper and more liquid market for cryptocurrency derivatives may be on the way, to the benefit of businesses looking to hedge cryptocurrency cash positions arising from international payments. Recently, mainstream derivatives exchanges CME Group and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) decided to offer, respectively, Bitcoin futures6 and options.7 The Nasdaq stock exchange and broker Cantor Fitzgerald followed suit, announcing plans to offer Bitcoin futures from early 2018.8

As cryptocurrencies challenge international payments protocol, traditional payments service providers are responding. They are looking for ways of helping businesses to benefit from cryptocurrencies' fast settlement, security and cost-effectiveness while minimizing the FX and cash flow risks. For example, American Express recently announced a joint venture with international payments protocol Ripple and a large British bank to provide fast, secure transatlantic payments for U.S. customers.

13:29 What Not To Do In Hawaii 20 Things You Should Never Do In Hawaii
There is a good chance that this post contains affiliate links. If you click on any of these links, I might earn a small commission at no extra cost to you (which I really appreciate, thank you!) The full disclosure policy can be found here.

There are lots and lots of blog posts out there with things to do in Hawaii. I have quite a few of them myself, such as 100 things to do in Hawaii.

What I wanted to write about today is what not to do in Hawaii, because there are a few things that should make this list too.

As of August 2021, there have been a lot of videos circulating with tourists touching wildlife, being disrespectful, trespassing, etc. It’s not surprising that this post about what not to do in Hawaii is gaining popularity once again.

If you don’t want to be “that tourist” make sure to check this out.

So, if you’re wondering “what to ask people who live in Hawaii” or “things you shouldn’t do in Hawaii” you’re in the right place.

Do I need a rental car in Hawaii?

You’ll find this later on the list, but it’s so important that I want to mention it here too. One of the things you should never do in Hawaii is to forget about a rental car!

In 2021 there’s a major rental car shortage in Hawaii, so get a car as soon as possible.

I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental. My #1 recommendation is to get a rental car to explore the islands! They have the best rates and free cancellation.

Let’s get right to the things you should never do in Hawaii.

1. Don’t touch the turtles in Hawaii

The honu (green sea turtles) are protected and you shouldn’t bother them. Hawaii is also home to four other types of turtles, Hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and olive ridley.

This should go without saying but just leave the turtles alone. Keep a safe distance and remember that this is their home and you are a guest.

I have a blog post with the ultimate guide to Hawaiian animals if you’d like to learn more about sea turtles and other wildlife on the islands. You can also check out where to find sea turtles on the Big Island.

Snorkeling with sea turtles is one of the most fun things to do in Hawaii, just make sure to keep your distance.

Sea turtles at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach on the Big Island.

2. Don’t touch the dolphins and monk seals

Swimming with dolphins in the wild is a fantastic experience, but keep your distance from dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, and all other sea creatures.

Tourists being disrespectful and breaking the law by harassing or touching monk seals has been a huge problem lately. The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered special, so it really is a treat to see them in person!

It is estimated that there are only around 1400 Hawaiian monk seals remaining. It’s a privilege to see these beautiful animals, so please be very careful not to disturb them.

Look, but don’t touch! Two Hawaiian monk seals on Glass Beach in Kauai.

3. Don’t touch the coral in Hawaii

Are you sending a trend with what not to do in Hawaii? There are plenty of “look but don’t touch” things on this list.

Don’t touch the coral, don’t step on the coral, just be careful around the coral. Touching or stepping on coral can cause irreparable damage to the coral. It can also cut you, so be very careful.

You’re probably starting to get the idea. When in doubt, don’t touch it.

4. Don’t wear sunscreen that isn’t reef-safe

Speaking of coral, make sure to choose a sunscreen that is 100% reef-friendly. I have a blog post about what reef-safe sunscreen is and why it’s important.

Hawaii has phased out sunscreen that isn’t reef-safe, but of course, many tourists still bring their own. Make sure to choose brands that are reef-friendly such as All-Good, Badger, and Coola.

5. Don’t call everyone “Hawaiian” in Hawaii

Being “Hawaiian” isn’t like being “Californian” or a “New Yorker.” Generally, those who live in Hawaii are referred to as “locals.”

You might also see the term “kama’aina” which literally means “child or person of the land.” This is another reference to being local but not necessarily Hawaiian. For example, some restaurants offer “kama’aina” discounts.

The term Hawaiian (or kanaka) is reserved for those with Native Hawaiian heritage. Native Hawaiians make up only a small percentage of the residents of Hawaii so don’t assume that everyone in Hawaii is Native Hawaiian.

6. Don’t underestimate the power of the sun in Hawaii

I always have people tell me that they “don’t burn,” including my own husband. Hawaii is close to the equator and the sun is intense.

Well, even if you don’t burn at home, you might burn in Hawaii! Make sure to stock up on reef-safe sunscreen before you leave, just in case.

7. Don’t skip the car rental in Hawaii

Every island in Hawaii is beautiful, and you’ll need a car to experience most of it. I recommend Discount Hawaii Car Rental. You’ll find the best prices on rental cars in Hawaii.

Trust me, you don’t want to wait until you arrive and pay “tourist prices” at the airport when you realize that you need a car.

In 2021 there has been a serious shortage of rental cars after many rentals were taken off-island during the closures of 2020. Makes sure to reserve a car early to avoid any problems.

Even on Oahu where excellent public transportation exists, you’ll still want to venture out on your own and explore. Some visitors think they won’t need a car, and then spend more money later to get one.

Just trust me that unless you’re spending two days in Waikiki only, you’re going to want a car! Check out my “Do you need a rental car in Hawaii” post or check out Discount Hawaii Car Rental and reserve your car now.

Polihale State Park on Kauai. You can’t get here without a car!

8. Don’t forget that you’re on “island time” in Hawaii

Things tend to move a little slower in Hawaii, and that’s okay. You’re on vacation, so lose your mainland “go go go” attitude and relax.

Most of the speed limits in Hawaii aren’t over 55 miles per hour if that. It’s always a good idea to plan out your days, but remain flexible and try not to rush.

If you’d like some ideas for Hawaii itineraries, check out:

9. Don’t be an aggressive driver in Hawaii

Most people in Hawaii are friendly drivers; it’s part of the Aloha spirit. Don’t be an aggressive driver, honk your horn at everyone, etc.

As one commenter pointed out, it is a little different on Oahu. There is definitely more traffic on Oahu, and a bit more road rage.

However, in general, drivers in Hawaii are friendlier than average. On the flip side, locals know the roads better than you do. If you are enjoying the sights but see cars lining up behind you, pull over and let them pass.

You might also enjoy: how to visit Hawaii on a budget

10. Don’t be rude to your restaurant servers/bartenders etc.

Again, this is something else that shouldn’t have to be said, but it does. Most people in the service industry are paid very little, work very hard, and rely on tips to make money. Just don’t be rude.

Many of those in the service industry also had a very rough year in 2020, so again, just be nice! It takes nothing away from you to be nice to another person.

11. Don’t forget that Hawaii is the 50th state

Here we go. There are two parts to this one. First, Hawaii is part of the United States, so don’t be weird and act like it’s a third-world country. Everyone speaks English, and it’s overall a very safe place to visit.

Second, the history of Hawaii becoming part of the U.S. is very complicated, and some locals aren’t happy about it, so try to be conscientious of that.

12. Don’t rent snorkel gear

Germs aside, it will get expensive renting snorkeling gear over and over. If you plan to snorkel often, bring your own set.

I have this set, and you can check out my Amazon page for more snorkeling recommendations.

13. Don’t forget that there are alternatives to high-end resorts

Hawaii has all kinds of accommodations for every budget. From campgrounds to VRBO condos to boutique hotels to the Presidential Suite at the Four Seasons.

If a 5-star resort is what you have in mind, check out the best luxury hotels on Maui and Oahu:

If you’re looking for an affordable, boutique hotel, check out my review of the ISO Kauai. You can also check out my list of the best boutique hotels in Hawaii.

If you’re celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, check out the best resorts in Hawaii for honeymoons.

No matter what your budget, you can probably find something Expedia. They also have vacation rentals, so if a condo is what you’re looking for, you also have that option.

I do not recommend Airbnb in Hawaii, you can find out why in my blog post. VRBO is a good alternative if you must go in that direction since it’s owned by Expedia.

14. Don’t forget to try Hawaiian food

Hey, you’re in Hawaii, try some Hawaiian food! Many local restaurants offer options like plate lunch, poke, and more.

You can also check out the Farmers Markets for local produce. If you’re on the Big Island, make sure to tour a coffee plantation for Kona coffee.

You can also get great smoothies and juices made from local fruits. My favorite is Kauai Juice Company on Kauai which sources as much local produce as possible.

Checking out a Hawaii pineapple farm is another fun activity. Check out my post about where to find pineapple farms in Hawaiiif it’s on your must-do list.

15. Don’t speed or use your phone while driving

You really shouldn’t do these things anywhere, but don’t do them in Hawaii either.

Using your phone while driving is illegal. It’s also good to remember “island time” as I mentioned earlier, most people aren’t in a hurry, and you shouldn’t be in a hurry either.

16. Don’t forget to give yourself ample amounts of travel time

Fifty miles in Hawaii isn’t the same as 50 miles on the mainland on an interstate. Depending on where you are, driving 50 miles will likely take an hour, and maybe much longer.

Make sure to do your research and know-how long travel will take and plan accordingly.

The Hana Highway or Road to Hana is an experience that takes a few hours, but did you know it’s only 45 miles from Paia to Hana?

If you’re planning a Maui vacation, don’t miss 50 things to do in Maui. There are plenty of spots on the Road to Hana that made the list.

17. Don’t dismiss warning signs in Hawaii

You know, the signs that say “sharp coral” or “strong current” or “60 people have died here.” If there are a lot of warning signs on a beach, you can always try another beach.

The same goes for a hike; if a trail is closed, there is probably a reason for that! Don’t risk your life for an Instagram photo.

18. Don’t litter, smoke on the beach, be disrespectful, etc. in Hawaii

Should I have to mention this? I will say it anyway. Smoking on the beach is illegal in Hawaii, so don’t do it. Also, make sure to pick up after yourself. Hawaii is a beautiful place, and everyone would like to keep it that way.

On the subject of being respectful, don’t trespass on private property. Stay away from areas that say Kapu, which can translate to “keep out,” “no trespassing,” “sacred,” etc.

I’ve had a few people ask me about incidents they’ve read about online with tourists having problems with locals. 99% of the time the tourist was trespassing, littering, or being disrespectful to local culture in some way.

Take a few minutes to learn about Hawaiian culture before your vacation to avoid any issues like this.

You can check out my ten things to know before going to Hawaii post for more information.

19. Don’t touch the lava

If you have the opportunity to see active lava, don’t touch it. Just don’t do it. This is obvious, right?!

That said, if you have the opportunity to see active lava on the Big Island, you should definitely do it!

Many visitors think that there is always active lava on the Big Island, but that isn’t true. The best way to find out about active lava is to check Hawaii Volcanos National Park website.

20. Don’t take lava rocks home

Lava rocks might seem like a great souvenir, but legend has it that you’ll be cursed if you take it home. The elements return to Hawaii is the only thing that will lift the curse.

You might roll your eyes, but the post office sees hundreds of lava rocks, sand, and other materials returned to Hawaii every year! Better safe than cursed, right?!

If you’d like to learn more about lava rocks and black sand, I have a post about black sand beaches in Maui that discusses all of those things in detail.

Speaking of sand, you aren’t allowed to take the sand home either. Yes. black/green/red sand is really fun and unique but leave it in Hawaii.

16:32 Mechanism Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury In Female Soccer Players

08:50 Kim Kardashian Files For Divorce From Husband Kanye West
Kim Kardashian West has filed for divorce from her husband, Kanye West, her publicist confirmed to CBS News on Friday. The reality star and the Grammy-winning hip-hop artist had long been rumored to be ending their six-year marriage.

The two married in a 2014 ceremony in Italy after the birth of their first daughter, North, 7, and went on to have three more children: Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 1. It was the third marriage for Kardashian, whose first marriage was to producer Damon Thomas and second to basketball player Kris Humphreys, and the first for West.

The news comes after a tumultuous year for the couple. West, who is 43, announced in July via Twitter what turned out to be a disorganized campaign for the presidency, a move he had been toying with for years. He quickly drew criticism for accepting millions in federal stimulus funding for his clothing and sneaker business, Yeezy.

After he made controversial statements at a South Carolina campaign rally and tweeted a series of late-night comments aimed at his wife, Kardashian came forward to discuss his ongoing struggles with bipolar disorder.

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian in 2016. Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty "Anyone who has [bipolar disorder] or has a loved one in their life who does, knows how complicated and painful it is to understand," Kardashian wrote on Instagram at the time. "I've never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye's right to privacy when it comes to his health."

In September, the 40-year-old Kardashian and her family announced the end of their long-running reality show, "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," the last season of which is set to premiere next month.

Kardashian turned to advocacy during the last presidential administration. She lobbied the Trump White House on criminal justice reform and helped win the release of Alice Johnson in 2018, visiting the White House last March to continue her efforts. She has said she is studying to become a lawyer. Her father, Robert Kardashian, was a criminal defense attorney who once represented O.J. Simpson and died in 2003.

The two have not commented publicly on the split.
